I've you've ever heard of "belt dressing" you'd know it's a simple spray used to "renew and soften engine belts" including fan/alternator/AC/pwr steering/etc...
These work great in a pinch if your belt slips a bit under load or when you race the engine and you hear that familiar squeal and you don't want to take the time to tighten said belt...
here's something NO ONE will tell you:
DON'T EVER..... EVER...............EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER.........
NEVER EVER USE AN OLD CAN OF BELT DRESSING!!!
I had a slipping belt and an old mechanic friend/neighbor offered a can he "had laying around". It looked old but I figured, what the heck, it is what it is.....
100 miles later ALL my belts melted.
MELTED!!!
FELL APART LIKE SOMEONE HAD SPRAYED THEM WITH ACID!!!!
ya... not fun..... almost stranded in the mountains had I not kept an old set of belts in storage for emergencies (ANOTHER REAL GOOD IDEA!!)
Lesson - be very wary of chemical treatments that claim to fix mechanical problems... some things just can't replace some good old fashion wrenching.........
...that's my two pence..............
