I have a 1976 Champion as well and they are aluminum outer shell with steel tube framing. Very heavy but solid. I have the original flyers that have alot of info for our RVs if you would like, I could send you one or post pictures when i get a camera.

The Champion motorhomes made in the 80's were made of fiberglass.  I suspect that your 76 model is also.  My 87 model Champion is made of all fiberglass except the bottom 18 inches or so which is made of aluminum.  That wooden cargo door is no doubt a homemade job.  Looks to me like you have a fun project to work on.
