Hey guys. What should the spark plug gap be on my 89 454? .035 or .045? HEI with Accel cap/rotor/high voltage coil.

With a higher (hotter) output from the Accel system compared to stock you may want to open them up a bit more. I think that you can go out as far as .060. The hotter spark across the longer gap can equate in better combustion where a hotter spark across a shorter gap can end up in plug failure due to melt down of the electrode. If that makes sense.I researched this a while back when I was considering an MSD system for my car. I never followed up on it but it made some sense to me. It was for my Lincoln LS and I just went the wimpy route and threw in a new set of COP's and iridium plugs.

Also Kevin I have been a tune up specialist for 40 years and on a chassis dyno we saw absolutely no increase in performance on a street driven rig. High horse power and high rpm yes there is a gain, but absolutely no gain under 5,000 rpm and a stock to mild engine.

Spark plug gap is .045

Nope. Plenum with external cold air intake and filter. I decided to just go with .045 since it what I've been running since I bought the thing, and it should work great with the new high performance Accel Super Coil.

Hi Kevin, do you have the factory air filter housing? The tune up sticker should be on it.
