The new carb on my Allegro is driving me insane. I get that tuning a Quadrajet is a bit of an art, but it's been giving me fits. When I get the choke to work properly, it locks the 4 barrels out. When I get the 4 barrels to work, the high speed idle won't set. I've been going in circles.

Anyhow, I wanted to demonstrate the issue to my brother. He wanted to drive. I obliged. I've never ridden in the thing as a passenger. My brother did really well driving it. He's a locomotive engineer and said it felt like driving a train on the street. 4BBL worked, choke not so much. That fine line.

It was really cool sitting in the passenger seat. I need to teach my GF how to drive it. She'll never do it, but I can dream can't I? Same with my limo. I've only ridden in the back once when my brother drove it. But my passengers have fun....

Jack - here are a couple of pics. I left them huge on purpose in case you're able to see anything obviously wrong.

It's in the high-40s this morning so it was a perfect time to test it again. I floored it with the gas pedal to see if the choke snapped shut. It didn't. When I work the throttle manually (open it up all the way) then it does snap shut. That's problem #1 I suppose: the gas pedal isn't allowing enough travel to set the choke.

It started at about 2,000 RPM for about 2 seconds then dropped down to about 1,200. As it warmed up, the idle slowly picked up to the target 1,900 RPM fast idle. When I goosed the throttle, it dropped back down to about 1,000. When it was fully warmed up it got down to the 700 RPM idle speed. So it's all working right now, but it's inconsistent because of whatever binding is occurring.

Thanks!

Thanks Jack. I'll try all that. It seems to be running fine and operating correctly when I manually set the choke. The trick is to get it to do it by itself, so I'll follow your instructions once it's cooled off again.

Here's where it's binding. The high speed idle cam is binding down by the throttle plate shaft. I have to push it pretty hard to engage or disengage it. Is that normal? I filmed this when it was cold.

I should have mentioned that I had the throttle propped open when I filmed that :)

I took the thermostat housing and other junk off, lubed it up and put it all back together. The engine was still warm when I went out for the night so I couldn't check it until this morning. It is now operating as it should - the choke set with the gas pedal and ultimately opened up and the idle dropped. I still have some fine tuning to do. The high-speed idle is too high initially and the choke is opening too quickly. I can make those adjustments and try again once it cools off.

Thanks for your help!

I'm baaaaccckkk.....with more choke issues. I think I'm closing in on it, but it's still not behaving like it should.

I had it out for an overnight trip so I could see how it behaves on the road in addition to the cold startup. Cold startup was fine. It had the high idle for a few minutes and knocked down where it should after that period of time. BUT...once on the road I found the 4 barrels were locked out. Grrrr. So just before I left the campsite, with the engine cold and not running, I floored it and the choke snapped shut. I adjusted the black thing in the housing to the point where the spring just had it shut. This resulted in no fast idle - started up cold and lumpy until it warmed up enough to idle decently.

This morning I tightened the fast idle screw without messing with the choke adjustment. Floored it cold, choke snapped shut and it started up at about 1800 RPM which is good. BUT, after about 5 seconds the high idle kicked off without me touching the gas pedal.

I also had to pump the pedal a few times to get enough fuel for it to fire from the cold start. And I believe it still running rich - it runs on/diesels something fierce when I shut it down. I need to tinker with the idle air screws some more.

Thanks - I just sort of did the opposite before I read this, so now I have to let it cool off. With it hot, I could see the secondary lockout wasn't releasing. So I adjusted the choke open just to the point where the lock out cam dropped open.

I also noticed that the idle stop tang on the accelerator level was bent. I just didn't look right. I bent it straight and then had to back off the hot idle screw about a full turn. I'm hoping (grasping at straws here) that this might have something to do with the fast idle not working properly. The fast idle cam interacts with the primary throttle shaft at a certain point. If it's bent and not closing properly (which it was doing), maybe the fast idle won't work right? I dunno. I need to let it cool down and start all over again!

I arranged a replacement from the rebuilder. This thing is not right. I've goofed around with a lot of Quadrajets (not nearly as many as you) and have never had so much trouble. There is something binding on the right side of it that props the high speed idle open at random. The air horn gasket is soaked with fuel. I sent an e-mail to the guy a few days after I got it because it was flooding over. There's something fishy with this one.

I had it out a couple of hours ago and the idle kicked up to 2500 RPM while I was driving. I had to stop and shut the engine off with it in gear. Even then it dieseled until I could remove the doghouse, remove the air cleaner, and close the throttle. I was rewarded with a face full of fuel. That set the smoke alarm in the RV off. I'm done with this thing.

Hopefully the replacement will be okay.

I haven't sent it back yet...I am hoping there's a simpler solution. It runs so well once it's warmed up I don't want to mess with that success unless I have to.

One of my dad's Vettes has a good working Quadrajet carb on it from the factory. I went over there yesterday to see how it works. It's pretty much the same as mine. The high-speed idle lever seems to function just like mine - it does get "sticky" depending on the throttle and choke positions. His choke slams shut with authority, though. Very firmly. If I adjust mine that tight, it won't open back up again. But, having the choke adjusted that tight seems to allow proper operation of the high speed idle cam.

I'm starting to wonder if my problem is the aftermarket electric choke kit?

I haven't checked the power supply with a light yet. I only have a multimeter. My dad has a light, though. I'll be over there later so I'll snag it. If he'll let me, maybe I'll "borrow" the factory electric choke from the Vette too.

I installed the aftermarket electric choke and I honestly can't remember what circuit I tapped into. I'll double check it.
