I have an Atwood 6 gallon Water Heater. Pilot light seems strong, Thermocouple is new and glowing Red hot, but the pilot light will not remain lit after the button is released, even after some time being held down. Could it be a problem with the gas control/valve? How do I test this?

Thanks

Hello Ben,

I am having the exact same problem with my Bowen water heater (now Atwood).  I just replaced the pilot assembly, so it has a new thermocouple but won't stay lit after lighting the pilot light for long periods of time.

I am wondering if you ever figured out what the problem was with yours?

Thanks,

Brandon

I 'think' I did lol. I just ended up replacing the whole valve control. I found one at a local dealer for around $100, Wasn't difficult to do (minus pulling the old one out). Fixed the problem all together as its basically all new now.

Not sure if that helped or not, but if at wits end with it, that be my best guess. Certainly fixed the problem and peace of mind now that its done!

Ben

My fix was to replace the whole Gas control Valve. Works like a charm now!
Gas controls have an ECO (emergency cut off) built in. If the TP valve pops off or the water heater gets fired when empty, it can blow the ECO and the control must be replaced. Check for thermocouple immersion in pilot flame, and a good thermocouple itself. If both are good then its time for a control.
