I have a Dana 70hd rear end I
removed from a Dodge framed motor home (M500 chassis). The RV had been in an
accident and was at the local wrecking yard. My plan has been to use it on my
1948 Studebaker truck restoration.
When I removed the axle I also took the spring mounts off of the Dodge frame to
use on the Studebaker. The problem I have now is I have misplaced my notes and
have no idea how far apart the spring mounts should be on the frame. So if
someone out there has a 1976 M500 chassis RV with a Dana 70hd, could you please
measure the distance between the spring mounts? Thanks, Neal

BTW I mean from front to back.

I measured 48 3/4 " on my 1977 M500.
We must have different axels.  Measuring from eye to eye unloaded it is about 54".  There is no way I could shorten it by eight inches.  Thank you for measuring!  Neal

Hi Neal,

I crawled under again.  You asked for distance between the mounting hangers, which is 48 3/4".  Then there is some distance to the middle of the hanger where the bolt is for the spring shackle.  Then the shackle goes out to where the spring itself attaches.  My spring measures 56 1/2" bolt center to bolt center "Loaded". RWC

Is that 48 3/4" center to center on the mounting hangers?  Neal

No, that's between the hangers.  From the rearmost edge of the front hanger to the forward most edge of the rear hanger.  If you want center to center I'll crawl under again tomorrow.  RWC

Thanks!!!  No need to crawl under again.  I can work with the numbers you gave me and, I get 55 3/4" from center to center.  Holding the tape-meaure up to the unsprung axle it looks pretty good.  Again THANKS!   Neal
