Thought I would put this up. Many many years ago I did some destruction derby racing. We ran dodge wagons with the old 318. And our best trick was replacing the flat spot bogging carter carb (stock) with a Rochester 2G Carburetor. The performance was a LOT better. I found a old 2G at a swap meet a few weeks ago and remembered way back. Put a kit into it and found a electric choke conversion on e-bay. My memory is not fading that bad, works just like I remember. Smooth, much better pick up and my foot is not mostly on the floor anymore. Mileage is a hair better as well. VERY simple swap unbolt the old bolt on the new. All my linkages hooked right up. And the base is the same as the stock carb so no messing about with adapter plates ect.
Bottom line if you have to replace or buy a rebuilt carb the Rochester 2G Carburetor is the way to go for the old 318s. Hope this helps, Tony, Joy and Cool Paw Luke

I have a 76 with a 454. would the carb swap work? would it be worth it?
I'm pretty sure you have a 4 barrel carb on a 454, so no really only good for a 318 two barrel.
I wonder if a throttle body carb would be a good swap for the Chevy 454... it's a first attempt at fuel injection. The 454's are great engines, provide they get LOTS of cool air, water and can breath - carb and manifolds. Manifolds are famous for high temps and cracking... have replaced 2 factory sets before I went to custom headers with heat shields. Pricey, but a lot of fun and more power.
Hi Marty. What do you think of the 318's? Not sure if there is any way to more gas mileage out of the 454's; kind of an "oxymoron".
The Dodge 360 from the '70's ran a Holley 2 barrel carburetor stock. It is simple to rebuild, uses a mechanical choke, rebuild kits are at the local auto parts. Also the stock fuel pump is a good one, cheap like $25 and easily sucks gas from the back tank. I'd be pretty sure it will bolt up to the 318. It's my impression that the top of the engine are the same.
The factory repair manual covers rebuilds, etc and the removal and installation is simple if you understand carburetors and yes the 440 runs a 4 barrel. Never rebuilt one but I guess I could. A carb is a carb.
