<p>The tiny piece of spring steel used in the turn signal switch to keep pressure on the signal lever fell down and onto the rear light contacts and acted like a bridge circuit, keeping both the rear signals going.</p>
One of the mechanics at work suggested exactly this probably happened, so I pulled the steering wheel and darned if he wasn't right.
