Hello  All,    Well, I know there are so many of you with much more experience then I have on motor homes  so I am asking some advice on buying one.

    I have redone my old 64 Lo Liner and am getting ready to make atrip back to Missouri . But I am thinking of selling the old girl and getting a Class C. Don't want a bigger  Thinking of a older one. I say older one because Im not looking to spend 20,000 plus for one. I'm going to be looking for a cash deal . I  have found some ads on Graigslist for some such as mid 80s to late 90s  from the 3 to 5k price with low miles and hey seem to have sold quick.  Anyway,  what is some opinions?  Ford? Chevy?    Brands?

    I really wanted to find a school bus and convert it but don't have a place or the health to get into that.

    I got years experience around big busses but really in the dark at getting into the  buying of a motorhome.  I just appreciate any input.     Thanks    Rick

Hi Rick,  many folks are very happpy with "classic" class C's built in the 70' (pre smog) to the 80's. I would look for one with under 50,000 miles, that has proven service records that you can see, has been very well maintained, has NO ROOF or WINDOW leads (usually in the overhead) even if they have been "repaired". RUN don't walk away from any with roof leaks unless, like some of us vintage wing nuts, you actually like total rebuilds.  There are so many very clean classic class C's that are road ready I would strongly suggest buying one of these since you have immediate travel plans. These are usually owned my "mature' rvers and are/were their last  well loved rig.  These are, in my opinion, the way to go for you at this point.  Have an rv tech do a 200 point check, have a mechanic check out the engine, tranny (weak point), brakes and tires.  Expect to find at least something that needs repairs so have them give you an estimated repair cost to be negotiated with the sell... off their selling price.  Never buy anything sight unseen and without a complete check by authorized experts. Also, ALWAYS pull a check to see if it is a rebuilt from a wreck, just like a car.   How old are the tires?... should be replaced at least every 5 years due to sidewall checking, when was the roof last professionally resealed? got invoices? Does rooftop and dash air work and blow cold? Does generator work ... a genny is an absolute must for us since we often travel to very remote or hot weather sites.  We are a bit odd in that we would rather pay a few thousand dollars more for a turn key righ; unless of course it's a vintage rv or bus we want to restore over 2 or 3 years. That's another matter.  Be patient. Your's is out there waiting for you :)

Hello Rick, Pat sized it up pretty good. The water leaks is a killer it kinda lets you know if the people took care of it or tried to cover it up. I just picked up a 1985 chief 33' last year and i really love it . low miles is nice but if they took good care of it that may not be a issue. check under the hood and see if it has all the stock stuff or something like a banks power kit is good. and dont forget the refer. good luck Ron........

Hi Ron,  Thanks for the reply.  I will keep those things in mind.  I do apprecieate this advice from you and Pat.

              I am not to worries about electrical repair because thats up my alley as well as plumbing or appliance repair. But  leaks I will lookat closely. I am concerened about engines. I could do some repairs but nothing major anymore. I am also trying to get some feedback on what were some good (gas) engines to look for in a rv. Has a Ford proven better then  Chevy or Dodge motor or vice versa and things like that.   I also realize that fuel milage might depend on the size but kinda trying to get a idea on mpg of under a 25ft one,  Gas engine that is.
