I've been in the area many times and just took the parents down there a year ago or so. We camped at the KOA in Pigeon Forge, its within walking distance to the main Trolley Station.  Both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg can get tight with traffic and be a pain to commute via car with limited parking.   We found the Trolleys to be super cheap and handy to get around.   The Titanic is a fairly new attraction and is located in Pigeon Forge.  There is a lot to do and see in the area, I think you'll enjoy it.  Dollywood is a nice family place to visit as well, the folks that work there are super down to earth friendly people.  One thing to note the town jams up Sunday while everyone is leaving, so you'll want to make a good exit strategy.   If you end up staying at the KOA, the road that runs behind it is called Veterans BLVD.  Its a good escape road that will take you around the mess in Pigeon Forge with minimal traffic.
