I bought myself a 1988 Chevy Horizon 170.  The inside has been somewhat gutted and I'm trying to get things back together on it.  My main problem right now is the wiring for the camper.  The driver's area is fine...dome light and everything seems OK...other than the horn not working.  But the camper area has no power to anything.  I haven't found a fuse box anywhere other than for the van itself.  Shouldn't there be one for the lighting, plugins, ac, fridge...etc...?  Any help would be appreciated.

Also one more question.....anyone have any ideas where I would obtain the toilet/shower combo for this?   ....or are they available as a generic piece?

Rick, you say the interior of the camper is gutted maybe the fuse box has been removed, do you have a a 110 power cord attached to the camper? if so try to follow it back to where it goes it may lead you to a fuse box or something that is being used as a fuse box.

It's somewhat gutted.  The fridge and stove hood are still there.  The water pump, furnace and rooftop air conditioner is still installed, also.  There is a battery charger/inverter in a small door under the fridge but I can't see where or how to hook a battery and/or AC into it.  Wires all seem to lead back towards the furnace area.  I'm having a time with this...for sure.  I have no experience with this stuff at all.  I will take some pictures tomorrow (I'm off work) and post them.  It will probably be easier to SEE what I'm talking about rather than me trying to explain something I'm dumb as a rock about.


Rick, It sounds like they are using the batt. charger/inverter to run the 110 system and the only fuses for this type of system are located in the batt. charger itsself, I have seen this system on boats before dating back to the 60's and some 70's but not on campers, when you are pluged to shower power the batt. charger runs the inverter for 110 and charges your batt's for when you are on the water you use 12 volt power. It may be that there is a place outside of the camper that will have a cover over a place to plug the power cord into and then to shore power just like a boat, look around the outside for something that looks like the male end of an ext. cord if you find that then thats where your batt. charger probable will get its power. Hope this helps.

OK...here are some pics of the inside and of the converter.  Maybe this will give you an idea of what I'm trying to figure out.

Rick, Just looked at the pictures and the best I can tell is in the picture where all the wires come up and connect to a panel it looks like there are plug in type fuses like what you would have in your car if this is correct then that is your fuse panel for your 12 volt wiring, then in the picture that says power converter with batt. charger it has two brakers like you would have in your house those protect the charger and converter and AC outlets and air cond. but there still has to be a way to get 110 to the charger which side of the camper is  the charger on that would be the side I would look for a cord that will pull out to be pluged in to shore power or a male receptacle to plug a power cord into, do you have a dual or two batt. system one to start the camper and one to run the 12 volt system in the camper if you have dual batt;s then the one that runs the 12 system is hooked to the charger already. As far as where the wires go you may never know they run up wall and behind things, about the only thing you could do is to power up everything and remove fuses and turn off brakers one at a time and see what stops working. I don't know if this helps but I hope so.

There is a door on the drivers side that says AC power.   But no wire.  The converter pictured is on the passenger side of the camper.  Since there is no wire connected.....just not sure where to connect it to.  I suppose I could see if an RV dealer might have a clue.....even on one this old.  I can only hope.  There are no batteries that I can find anywhere and I haven't yet found cables where they were connected.  I sure wish people would leave manuals and such IN THE CAMPER.  But, oh well....such is the adventure.  Thanks for your help.

Rick, At least you know now that it was set up for shore power from the outside, what is inside at about the same place as the door outside? also what is under the van where the door is outside, look around and see if you can find any heavy gauge wires around that could be traced to the charger or main brakers. As far as the batts. if you did have a dual setup the batts. would probable be under the hood and be wired from the charger through a relay direct to the batt. to run the camper, there would not be any kind of cables from the charger that would connect to a batt. like jumper cables. As for the 120 volt wires to the charger if you can look around and behind the charger you will probable find 2 or 3 heavy guage wires comming out of the charger, those should be your 120 volt wires for the the shore power they may be black and white or red and black and green or blue or you might find wiring like is in your house 3 wires together in a heavy white wrapping or yellow wrapping, if you find this try to follow it the best you can to see where it goes and maybe you will locate your shore power wire that is to run outside the camper. Hope this will help you get the problem solved.

Rick, I just went back and looked at the pictures again of your main braker pannel and it looks like if you take the screws out of that pannel you will be able to see if there is any wires feeding the brakers and wires going to the charger then try to follow the feed wires back to where they go. Good luck.

I'll be back in the camper on Thursday to check it out some more.  I'm working 128 hours a week and that will be my first opportunity to look it over.
