I got a little off topic on my previous post that started with a question about load bearing walls on my 72 Grumman motorhome with the IH 1510MHC chassis. For that stuff and more search "load bearing walls"

It includes more than just the wall question.

So back on topic.

I had a locked up drivers side rear hub which meant that I couldn't move the RV. Ive been working on it for several months but its in the way where it is. Was delivered by tow truck and he didn't want to put it where I wanted as he was worried about my ground being too soft and getting stuck.

The brakes are the twin slave cylinder type.

I had to get a 1 1/2" , 1/2' drive impact socket for the outer nuts and 13/16" 8 point socket ( square nut ) for the inners. Bot are left hand threads. I also had to get a new impact wrench as my old one just wouldn't cut it.

It took me about 4 hours in all, spread out over a few days, to get the nuts off. Required lots of PB Blaster and heat.

After the wheels were finally off I pulled the axle ( 6 nuts - NOT left hand thread ) and got a puller on the shaft and get the drum off.

The shoes had rusted to the drum. In fact the drum had a lot of rust. I knocked most of the high spots off with a screwdriver then ,after I had removed most of the grime with carb cleaner I gave it a good going over with pieces of a sanding belt that Id cut so It was useful. It actually turned out really well.

It will need turning when I eventually get the brakes done but for now it should give me enough clearance to put the drum back on and be able to move the RV.

Now I just need to work out how to pull the shoes "in" so I can get the drum back on and have it rotate.

I do have the manual though its a little confusing. Once I get a chance to read up, I'll post an update.
