My parents owned an RV rental and sales business in El Paso, Texas in the late 60's and early 70's. I have been attracted to vintage travel trailers and motorhomes since. I have owned numerous RV's and have several rare motorhomes and a couple of vintage trailers now. I think my blood type is RV.

Thanks Gary! I'm excited to have found you--searched "Caddy Camper." Whoa, those are out of control...
  • sam d

gary, thanks... any thoughts on the conversion,im sure youve done some research, i was told by one guy to expect up to 20mpg.....ive talked with several guys who are big into 5.9s for their trucks, they haul goosenecks and get 22 mpg with it......
  • sam d

good info gary, thanks.. i was talking with a guy who does just that, buys the ford school buses and yanks out the 5.9 drivetrain and sells the whole eng/trans combo...he gets 2k for them with radiator,,,,says they avg 125k mileage......i was told the org gas axle wont take the touque of th diesel, so i need to upgrade to a international school bus pusher axle.....not sure, ill have to see, measurments, gear ratio etc etc..

    thanks

    sam

  • sam d

one other thing on the school bus combos, he says these are mostly allison 4 speeds...he says the 6 speed is tougher to get and would make the difference in mpg......
  • sam d

these are out of ford school buses, 125k miles...2k gets you a complete set up, 5.9 4 speed auto, radiator, assec...id go thru the motor but thats pretty good price...hes got 15 coming in in a month or so..local guy upsate ny area.

says an axle from an intr. pusher will work for the swap....nad the 6 spd allison is tougher to get, but will bolt up to the 5.9....

not sure on flipping the axle?  when its forward it climbs the ring gear, when its flipped it pulls the gear..wont that be a stress problem? not sure on the engineering, might be over thinking it........

Gary, I am looking at buying a pull behind to start my adventures. I am very interested in the Casita trailers. First thing I will need to do is sell the 1974 Winnebago 14 foot Indian truck camper my Dad gave me. This will make room for the trailer. The truck camper has been stored indoors when it wasn't being used. Still has the original curtains and seat cushions, pristine. I am sure some vintage camper seaker looking for a Winnebago truck camper that needs no restoring would jump at the chance to get their hands on this prize . But of course I know there is not alot of these people out there.

Hi, Gary, I absolutely love your slide show!! Did I miss somewhere on your page what years the 2 RVs are that you show? I love your comment about your blood type, I have to tell my dad that because he is the one that got all of my siblings and I (5 total) to love and respect nature and LOVE camping. Only my little brother and I have TTs now but all of us went tenting/RVing in our younger years. I love your dog pic, standing on the step-up. Our dachhund would sleep on ours when we were travelling. I have 2 shih tzus and 1 pug that have never been camping before but when I take them into my TT when I'm doing something in there they love it.

    Hi, Gary,

I had so much fun downloading all of my photos on here because it brought back so many great memories. What fun we had, even tenting---although I could never tent again without an actual bed! LOL My old body would never forgive me. I am anxious to get camping in my TT and start making its own memories.

Thank you for the welcome Gary, I will be updating my profile and adding some photos soon.  I am completely new in the RV community but my wife (Judy) and I are quiet excited about getting this show on the road.  We have used my brothers RV a couple of times and had more fun than we can describe.

Thanks, Gary!  I'm looking forward to learning a lot from all of you experienced folk!  Irene

Gary, I just received an email (from Good Old RVs) requesting that I verify my email address.  It looks kind of suspicious to me.  Is it really from the group?

    Thanks, Sam

  • Sam Green

OK, Thanks Gary.  I will save the email and forward it to Pat if he needs to look it over.  Sam

Thanks Gary.  We've done Walmart a few times.  They say most of them don't mind because they believe it adds to their security. Cindy

Hi Gary, sorry have not gotten back to you, we are so busy here at the bnb. I talked to a man at a local junk yard he seems to think that a late model chevy truck that had 6 lugs might work. I have to go borrow one to take to the repair man and see if they line up, it would be so great if they do. I have already bought the fabrics for the inside and can not wait to start making the cushions and curtains for it. hopefully by fall I will be done may not be able to get the painting done till next spring but that is alright I will drive that little thing anyway. love this site everyone is so nice, Patty

  • brian carson

thanks gary. spending time with my kids is very important. they grow up fast. i am a mechanic, we spend a lot of time repairing tractors, trucks, restoring muscle cars, garden tractor pulling, trap shooting, and just fun stuff. the camper just helps bring it all together. we will post more pics later. i am repacking bearings and getting the outside running lights replaced. new ones were cheap. then to  a local campground. thanks for the nice reply.  create a great day, brian and family.

  • Jenon Janelli

Thanks Gary.  Awesome that your dad remembered that, please thank him!  I called Safelite and they say they don't have any windshields for 60s model Macks.  I am trying to figure out which Mack model it would be.  Wish me luck...I'll keep trying!

  • Jenon Janelli

Hi there Gary.  I finally found a glass shop that can get the old Mack windshields and is willing to work on the Islander glass.  They are ordering windshields that are for 1963-1982 Mack trucks, but they called me this morning and said I need to know what series of Mack.  Would your dad happen to remember that?  From the research I have done, I am guessing it is the "F" series.  In other news...I am continuing the restoration on faith I will get a windshield...I disassembled and removed the bench the previous owner had put in where the table/booth seats used to be...not much of the original left.  Is your table still in decent shape in your Islander?  If you do scrap the body of the RV, I would love to buy that from you if I could!  Otherwise I can make one, but would love to have an original.  Please let me know if you or your dad have any ideas on if the "F" series Mack is the match.  Thank you so much for your help!

  • Jenon Janelli

Hi Gary!!  I am so happy to report the "F" Series Mack windshield was a match!  We had it installed yesterday and it went great.  I am attaching a photo.  Thank you so much for your help, and please thank your dad for the tip, it wouldn't have happened without him.  If you get any photos of your dinette, I would love to see them.  How is the condition of your driver seat?  Mine is ripped on one side.  Look forward to hearing from you.  Thanks again!  Jenon

  • Amy Christiansen

Gary   I think you would like my ole RV  i need some help selling it...  Its a great ole rig, ive been fixing it up a bit here and there... the awning adds so much!   please add me to your friends list.. I want to replace the rubber around the driver and passenger side windows but have no idea where to begin to look for that stuff... for instance...

  • Karen M. Graybeal

Just read your post to me I had no idea there was  a raley at the fair grouds !!! Here it is Aug. too. !!! I am going to check it out Thanks for the info maybe we will see you there.

  • Jenon Janelli

Hi Gary, hope your travels are going well!  Thanks for posting the pics!  We are still plugging away at our Islander...some water damage repair (of course!), ect.  Your Dinette and seats look great, I can see past the dirt.  I'm not sure if we will be able to wait until October to get the dinette, we may build so we can get her out camping.  But the seat will definitely be worth buying from you, probably both of them.  I also noticed your steering wheel looks like it may be in better shape than mine, any interest in selling that too?  Enjoy the Northwest!

  • Susan Shaw-Snow

No, I'm not familiar that I know of. I know a lot of snows. I knew a Charlie Snow but he only had sons and died Dec. 2011. I know the Snows in Baywood community. Gay Snow and her late husband Harry owned Baywood Store.

Thanks for the info Gary. I will post some pictures soon, I have been so busy trying to get things going on it that I have not got a chance to take pictures. I got the generator going now, it was a little dirty in the carb and I seem to have the Air conditioner going now. I noticed I dont have brake lights as well.

  • Artbug

Thanks Gary; Good old rv's  really looks great and very informative. I will post pics of my progress. Thanks for approving my application.--Art

I am so glad I found this site! I came across it while searching for ideas regarding rubber roof repair.....and I found good advice as well. There are a lot of RV forums online, but I never was motivated to join them. I love this one!

  • Seahorsefan

Thank you Gary it feels great to be here. I won't be able to go actively shopping for my rig and trailer for a couple more years, but it sure doesn't hurt to do some researching about it now. What is your experience with slide-outs on trailers. I'm thinking about going for one without slides. Less to break, less to worry about, and won't have to worry about if the parking slip I'm in is big enough.

  • Heliarc

Thanks Gary. Love the site. You guys have some great rigs. Building is great practice and you know exactly what you have when you're done. It's plenty of fun when you take a pile of scrap and turn it into something you can use. Also you don't send any money to China...

  • Seahorsefan

I agree with older made travel trailers. The ones from the 60's and 70's have got such a 'homey' charm that the new ones lack.

  • Leah Owens

Thx Gary! Just happened to run across this site. Might have seen you around the Big City of Azle! We're in the process of "resurrecting" a '61 Airstream. Tons of work but will be worth it!
