Wow, thanks for the great reply! I'm planning on only having a kid use the bunk so I'm sure this will work fine for me too.
Sorry about the delay. I run a seasonal business and have been really busy. I think I used 5/8 or 1/2. I'd have to look. We keep it stored at my shop.
What I did was use the plywood (1/2 or 5/8) and added 1/4 birch to the bottom side (for appearance) for a total of 3/4 or 7/8. I glued with liquid nails and stapled . The board across the front in 3/4 x 4 1/2 with a reinforcing strip of the same wood behind it.
My 80 lb daughter sleeps there without a problem. I've been up there (175lbs) and it seemed fine. Not sure if it would work long term.
This is the same set up as came from the factory so I assume it was "approved"

Can you tell me what material and thickness you used to construct your upper bunks? I am concerned with the bunks sagging in the center without support.
