One other thing, since it weighs 2000 pounds I would also recommend adding trailer brakes, most states require brakes on that size of trailer, in fact Idaho wants brakes on trailers as light as 1500 pounds. Another safety thing.
I would recommend you go with an Equal-I-Zer brand hitch, it is a weight distribution hitch with built in sway control. One setup doing both jobs and it is the top of the line among WDHs.
Thanks Lakota! I appreciate your insights. Can you suggest type or make? The camper is about 2000lbs, 20 feet long, single axle, no brakes. Much obliged!
With ANY trailer,, (excluding, small utilty trailers), should have a sway bar. It will, and does make a huge difference. Its best to have one when you dont think you need one. There have been instances in RV trailers that the load has shifted inside,, off setting the balance. Or hitting a cross wind, or a blow by wind from a semi trailer, lunging the trailer into a wiggle wag. A.K.A. Dog tailing.
Once a trailer goes into a Dog Tail,,,Its difficult to correct without Over-correcting.
Trailer tire blow outs can put a dog tail in effect also.
I highly recommend a sway bar,,,, Its an extra piece of insurance that you think doesnt make a difference, But , getting to your destination safely is what counts.
I pull 35 footers all the way down to 12 footers, and I ALWAYS use a sway bar. Even on the small 12 footer,, It may seems like over kill, But I havent lost one yet, (knock on prefabricated simulated wood)...
I am looking for some help here: I have been told not to take this rig over 50 mph. Do I need a sway bar? The hitch and tongue are new and sturdy! Are vintage campers fragil? The has had a lot of rebuild and we have traveled all over the country with it. Ideas? Thanks!
