Oooh, when that stuff sets up hard it can be like concrete.  I googled "Black tank cleaning" and came up with plenty of instructions on keeping the tank clean but nothing on dried caked stuff.  One site reccommended using rid-X but I have also heard not to use any thing real harsh due to damage on seals and such.  You might try the google and see if you can come up with something you haven't tried yet.  I know what you mean by obsession, my son-in-law gets upset with me because when I work on anything, I can't put it back together without cleaning all of the parts first.

Stan, I'm thinking that the pipe from the toilet to the tank is suposed to be black pvc type.  Are you saying that it is a white pipe with black crud all over it or could it just be a black colored pipe?  I hope that you are not insulted by my ignorance.  LOL
