It has been a while since we were here.  Thought we had better share the latest.  After 17,000 miles...slow miles.  The 318 gas engine is out and a new to us 6BT cummins (1st gen 12 valve)  with a 4 speed allison trans is mostly in.  A bit more work on the new front cross member/ front engine mount and plumbing, wiring, drive line and exhaust.

Well the cummins is in with 1850 miles on it.  The pros and cons.  We will start with the good stuff.  We went up a 8% grade at 50mph and we averaged 15 mpg over 1850 miles.  I added high end sound proofing to the whole cab area and we can talk going down the road.  No vapor lock in 100 degree heat. The rig runs much cooler now due to re-placement of where the radiator mounts. 

The not so good.  The trans and engine came from a bluebird school bus with air brakes so we have no park.  I added a drag racing line lock to the front brakes for park and we now have very nice chocks.  We lost the rear e-brake with the trans change.  Top speed 60mph.  Had to have new leaf springs made for the front for the added weight and it really needed them anyway 48 year old springs. 

So we will add new springs to the rear as well and a late model rear axle with disk brakes and 373 gears instead of the 410s we have now.  Should kick top end up to 70-75mph  E-brake will come back with the new rear also.  And I will use the same brake calipars on the front so when I set the e-brake I lock all 4 park

Sounds like you got it going on,, thats great,, that ole cummins wont even feel the load when your cruising.
