I pondered the change from 16.5 to 16" and I may still do it some day. The thing about the transforce is it is sold by a lot of dealers and not just a Firestone tire store also they are a common tire found on large commercial box trucks to bread trucks so I feel relatively safe in traveling. I had that same concern though and the tire store in Lewis center assured me I would have no problem replacing one at least in the time period they would be used. I was wanting to find a set of nickel plated 16" tires when I bought the Palace and put them on that year but, the blowout changed my plans and I went ahead and bought the 16.5's based on that conversation with the store's manager.
Sticking with the 16.5 tires is fine right now when you are safe at home and have all the time in the world to wait. But what is going to happen when you are alongside the road with a ruined tire that no one within 500 miles has in stock? I would rather bite the bullet in one fell swoop and get new 16" wheels and 245/75R16 E tires and know that I would be able to find a tire in the middle of nowhere Nebraska than be at the mercy of an unscrupulous tire merchant who could hit me with a bill of $300 for a $130 tire because it was a special order and had special handling fees and I had to sit for 7-10 days waiting for it to arrive. Even if they were honest, sitting for that long at a $30 a day campground is not how I would want to spend my time or money. Just my thoughts on this matter as I battled what to do with the tires on the MMP that were 8R19.5 and hard to find.
I would stay with the 16.5s if you look onthe internet for the firestone transforce
You could save 3 or 4 hundred dollars
Hi James and Yvonne, you are spot on on the tire issue, I was unfortunate enough to experience this first hand with my 78 Travelcraft. It had great looking tires and the PO thought they was not over 5-7 years old. The unusual thing about my situation is the camper had just been through the Highway patrol inspection process due to some storm damage the insurance totaled it for. I drove about 20 miles after that inspection and blew the inside dual tire on the drivers side. The tire shop I went to would not touch the tires and told me that the spare tire was 15 years old and the ones on the ground was at least 10. I opted for the Transforce from Firestone and am very happy with them.
Make sure you check the age of the tires they my look good but if they are over 6years old they are getting ro the end of their life you dont want a blow out on an rv minelooked good when I bought it
they were over 7 years old so I replaced them not cheap 1500.00 if they are 16.5 size only a couple of companys make that size one is firestone transforce.
