Suspension air bags 13 Replies

Has anyone replaced the coil airbags? If so how did you get them in. The instructions say to twist the air bag but I can't get it to untwist once it is in coil.

Yeah mine has never run right. It's a reman carb, so it's "new." It doesn't like to start when it's cold, but that's because of the way I have the choke adjusted. If it sits for any period of time I need to pump the pedal 10-15 times before it will fire. It's running super rich and at a stop light will eventually start to flood. Idle drops and I have to put it in neutral to rev it up and clear it out. Once it's moving it's great.

I have a lot of crankcase pressure and I'm wondering if that's normal. I did a compression check and all of the cylinders are fine, but I get a lot of pressure/smoke out of the breather. It's hooked up to the air cleaner so it gets burned up anyway but it seems excessive to me. That being said, it has plenty of power and isn't using any oil. It leaks a little, but I never have to top it off. Have you noticed crankcase pressure on yours (or anyone else with a 454?).

And I, too, recently fixed my generator. It was running out of gas. It was a loose hose clamp at the pickup tube - the pump was losing suction. It's been bugging me for years. I'm glad I finally found the problem.

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I was also plagued with a squirrel infestation earlier this year. They set up camp in the void between the top of the gas tank and the floor. They chewed through ALL electrical, air and fuel lines that run across the top of the tank. It was a lot of work but I got it back together and working for our annual trip to NASCAR this past June.

Wow. Can't believe it's been so Long (sorry for the pun.) but I've gotten the rebuilt carb installed, timing redone, many other items fixed and the RV is finally running closer to what she should be. Found fuel leaks at the main fuel pump and generator, so that should help the MPG rating a bit. Follow on my YouTube channel or on www.thelonghauler.com blog

Going to be pulling the Rochester Quadrajet to send to Bill's Discount Carburetor in Daytona Florida for a complete rebuild. Great guy and totally knows carbs. He saved my at least a couple of times before on my Tioga. This carb has not had any work done on it since new (33 years now). Time for a refresh.

Made it back on what was a 3,242 mile trip down and up the east coast over 2 weeks. Still some tweaking to do on the genset and the carb but overall it was a memorable family trip.

Been debating a change in the drive train. First was a rear end swap to a better ratio for highway but upon all the advice I'm getting it's looking like swapping the transmission to a 700R4 would get me the economy at highway for about the same cost as an overdrive kit. We'll see....adventures at : www.thelonghauler.com as always folks.

Oh ya and you have to put a throttle position sensor on the carburetor.

Jim I have a 4L80E transmission with a aftermarket controller. Yes it's electric so you need to either change the speedometer or get a conversion box. The speedometer is cheaper. You also have to cut the drive shaft and move the transmission mount back. I got mine used out of a box truck and it bolted right up to the 454. She runs 65mph at about 22rpms. I keep the pulling power for hills and speed for the rest.

I saw the 10-11 mpg figure and thought, "Dang! I wish I was getting that!" I've been getting 6-7 mpg on my original TH400 tranny. Been considering swapping out the rear end to a lower ratio to get better highway efficiency.

Oh and on the awning thing - I recently got some NOS parts on eBay to make some long-needed repairs. You can try there.

Glad you had a good trip. Sorry if I've asked you this before, but do you have that 4L80E behind the 454? Did you get an aftermarket controller? Or is it not an "E" (is there such a thing)? I have many questions - I want OD but not sure the best way to go about it.
