Canned Ham roof coating partly removed

I've been scraping the grey coating off my canned ham for 3 days..still have more to go, but the heat has been driving me off the ladder.....I guess there's a reason somebody put this stuff up there years ago, but for the life of me I don't know why.  Maybe its to cool the interior down or maybe it was the fad in the day....I see other vintage trailers that do not have this stuff on their roof and their rigs look great.  I will go ahead and roll a white coating on when I'm done, or if someone suggests I paint it after a few days of sanding, I might consider that too.  The seams on both sides are gooped with sealant, should I remove it all and reseal it?  Looks like another big job, but I think the stuff will come off easy now that I'm a master scrapper and at my old age, that's say'n something.
