We are going to be traveling to MT in early December, and I am wondering if it is better to take I80 to I15 or I70 to I15 at that time of the year. Normally we travel to MT during the summer and go through SD on I90, but I am not taking chances on getting stopped by roads being closed because of wind and snow.

Winter time on any highway is a hit or miss,,,,, If at all possible,,, track the weather forecasts for the areas you plan to travel,, most forecasts are decent up to 7 days in advance... Ive driven I-80 in December with plenty of snow on the ground, but the state and county road crews did a really good job keeping the I-80 corridor open,,,,, (excluding Donner pass. Colorado).  Thats iffy,, even during spring and Fall months cuz of the elevation,,, But they clear that up rather quickly to keep traffic moving. I would prefer driving in the snow, then driving on the ice.

I agree Lakota about the ice, slow going and usually chained up.  Is 70 usually covered with ice instead of snow?
