As you describe the melt down of the fuse I would say a direct short. Pull the fuses and open the AC cover. More than likely you will find the problem as a melted fuse indicates a very high current like you would have if a power wire went straight to ground. Maybe a few over winter guest found a tasty morsel in the insulation on a wire harness. Good luck and keep us up dated. There are a few really good electrical folks on here and they love a challenge.

I have come across a/c compressors going out and drawing current enough to melt a wire or fuse block connection. When you replace an a/c compressor and add the R-134 and turn a/c on high and the compressor doesnt want to engage,, the problem is the pressure valve on the compressor line not opening due to a zero reverse pressure,, To rectify this,, unplug compressor,, run 2 wires, with small aligator clips, one for hot one for negative,, you will know when its right when the clutch on the a/c compressor engages.  restart engine,, turn a/c on,, fan on high and connect and add your R134 till correct pressure is achieved,

(New freon (R134 cans have a built in guage)., disconnect the 2 wires and replug in your a/c compressor plug and it should re-engage the compressor.

Rich did make an excellent comment about the little rodent visitors possibly snacking on some of the wires..

Thanks, ac working now.... On RV trip in Alabama. Last major issue, stepped out of Blue, and steps pulled completely away from RV.... Blessed with brother and brother n law that re-configured...now welded in place.
