Replica tank for Dodge Travco 270

I just had a brand new tank built that is identical to the original tank. I'm thinking someone may find these photos helpful.

Considering options on how to treat the inside of the raw metal tank. Any ideas? POR-15 was suggested.

Nice work! Mine doesn't look to be in great shape either. I'm not looking forward to replacing it. I smell fuel when I fill it but I believe it's the filler neck leaking (can't get to it without hacking another hole in the floor).

With regard to coatings, I'd like to think the factory tanks didn't have an inside coating for a reason. I would imagine just about anything you put in there - including POR15 - would eventually degrade over time being soaked in gasoline 24x7. That would be a major headache (chunks coming off and clogging your pickup tube). If the old one lasted as long as it did, your new one will likely outlive you and the rig.

I agree with Jim, best to leave it bare. there are gas tank liner products out there but I think most of them are meant for repairing rusted tanks and rely on the kit materials to etch the tank so the liner has some tooth to latch on to. messy job and costly. Google gas tank repair for more info.

Thanks for your insight. That makes sense to me. After reading about how the POR-15 cracks off in big chunks, I might just go for the au-naturel..

Thanks Pat, I have been so lucky to be using an old friend who's shop is less than a mile away at a very rural location in Vermont. He makes maple syrup and cider holding tanks, very talented, I'm very grateful.
