I am in the planning stage for a trip to northern Maine next August. I am having trouble finding a route that will let me travel up the western side of Maine. According to Google Maps there is no route that kinda parallels the border. The only roads I find are in central and eastern Maine. I prefer to drive 2 lane roads, I will do 4 lane only when necessary, like avoiding a 100 drive just to cover 20 miles of freeway. Both MapQuest and Google Maps are not good for that little maneuver, they are too literal when avoiding freeways.
Any input from anyone who knows the area will be greatly appreciated.

LOL, That was funny, but not a lot of help.
Taking 91 North to county rd 2 then county rd 3 keeps you on the western side of Maine,, its all country 2 lane just below the Canadian border.
Russ, try looking on Motorcycle forums. a lot of them list back road routs for motorcycle trips around two lane off the path types for touring bikes and adventure riders.
