if you're going north and south on the West Coast, here's what we've found...

the 210 around the LA area is HORRIBLE!!!  I mean POT-HOLE, CRACKED HIGHWAY, HORRIBLE!  So if you have to take it, plan on going slow or your kidneys will be bleeding...

North from LA - the Grapevine is what it is.... a long hard pull with so-so roads on I-5...

your other option (if you're coming from the East end of the state) is 58 over the Tehachapi pass.  A lot like the Grapevine but it's a longer pull but not quite as steep...

From Bakersfield north - until they fix I-5 - ALWAYS opt for 99.  I-5 is segmented concrete that will jack-hammer you to PIECES.  Right now (winter 2012) they are working on repaving most of south 99 so the bad spots that it has now should be fixed soon.

From Sacramento north, I-5 is very smooth - pretty much until Washington... Oregon does a pretty good about keeping it up....

well, there ya go.... hope this helps someone....

sorry, we NEVER take Hwy 1

we're always on our way to some trade event and 1 is certainly a slow scenic route

btw... speaking of scenic routes....

if you're wanting to get to the OREGON coast from I-5, your BEST ROUTE is 126 out of Eugene to Florence (CENTRAL OREGON) or 26 from Portland to Seaside (NORTHERN OREGON)

199 from Grants Pass to Crescent city is NOT A GOOD RV ROUTE - it's has endless winding curves and hills... 100 miles took us 4 HOURS!

Joy and I live on the Oregon coast (Coos Bay) and Joy travels to Brookings and Newport OR. for work at least twice a month.  This is a hwy 101 trip.  Our route to get to I-5 from the coast is hwy 38, less hills more passing lanes and they repave seems like every summer.  If anyone needs current conditions of 101 between Brookings and Newport just ask.  Hope this helps as well, Tony, Joy and Cool Paw Luke
