Yeah Jim, I took a peek at your pics...Looks like you had a fun time with that engine. Your drivers door looks a bit wider than mine. I don't know if I would have had the same luck as you.
I'm religious with a proper oil level and only put on about 6K mi/yr... I hope I never have to follow that same path...
My springs have sagged to the point where the left front tire will rub the floor on slow, tight turns. They came with air bags to compensate but the real solution is to put in the proper springs (on the to do list). My carb, also rebuilt twice so far, gives me fits. The choke doesn't work properly and it runs too rich to get through inspection. BUT, it does run strong once it's warmed up. I'm amazed at how the 454 pulls this barge along. The engine isn't original, though. I bought the rig with no engine and put a used GM Performance crate engine in it. It sounds like an absolute beast going down the road.
Thanks for the welcome Jim. It's been a work in progress and will always be that way I am afraid. Right now my biggest problem is carburation. I had the original carb rebuilt 2 seasons ago at a local shop here(Mill's Automotive, Whitewater, WI), but about the 3rd time I complained to the shop owner, he gave me a lead hammer from his personal toolbox, so I could beat on it every time it acted up. I found an Allegro last June at a junk yard, it was about the same year and popped that carb on, but it's still a dog. The secondary's barely work, but at least I am done beating it with a hammer. I'm about the 9th owner and am having the time of my life trying to match those owners to the 1,324 wire splices under the dash.
Why this thing hasn't melted to the frame yet is beyond me!
My front suspension seems pretty good yet, accept it pulls to the rt. when I apply the breaks. I dont know if the rt. one is sticking or if the left one is weak.
Jeez I could probably go on forever about all the things I wish I could afford to fix.
I keep having the same dream...The top execs at Winnebago shut down production and run it through their entire complex. Every one is so amazed and so full of positive energy. After 8 days and 425 employees giving it their all... It rolls out the other end, the heavens part, and a wood duck flies down and delivers the keys to my hand.
I must be nuts! I am still the only one that sees any beauty in this beast.
Welcome! I have an '84 Allegro, which underneath is pretty much the same as your Winnie. The P30 chassis is pretty solid, despite some common defects that are somewhat easy to address (front suspension being primary). I've had mine for a bit over a year and am having a lot of fun with it. I, too, love to tinker and could spend all day messing with the thing if I wanted to.
