yep...when you up the line pressure, it affects the spool valves that control kick down and shift points.  It's "critical" function is getting pressure to those clutch packs and bands so they dont slip under load, yet, giving you a smooth shift at just off idle where you dont need or want a firm shift.

I always wondered how that worked. I do know it shifts to soon with it broken. But I got it repaired and shifts smooth and.responds now when under a load when accelerating and.drops a gear down when needs be.

line pressure will vary from 60 to 120 psi in forward gears according to throttle placement.  it does more than "kick down".  it affects how much pressure is applied to the clutch packs.  so its applying pressure like your at an idle even if you got a load on a grade.  in short, you'll smoke a clutch pack.

With the cable broke at the tab where it connects to throttle linkage, I can't punch the accelerator to drop down a gear so I have to take it out of overdrive to get up speed to pass or take the load off the engine.

Lakota, you prolly know the kick down controls line pressure to the clutch packs. You only get "engine idle" pressure when its disconnected.

Made the trip from Waco back down to Corpus Christ Tx. (Kick down cable for the.trans broke at tje throttle body). Did the late night early morning Bonzai run. Averaged 18mpg. (Unloaded). approx 75 mph. The trans with the 4 sod auto and 3.73 gears it handled well. A lil load up on the engine on up hills in traffic and had to kick the over drive off. Gonna take a breather then head down tto inspection station.

Wolf what ratio do you think the 2500 ? my grandfather was an old cowboy and he would put the 2500 and 3500 axles under the back of half tons also with great success!

Its a converted 1500 (half ton) to 2500 series rear axle (3/4 ton) Single real wheels.

Heavily tweeked 360 V-8, (5.9 L ). H.D. auto trans, 4 wheel disc brake.

Its a gasser, But pulls strong.
