Got a new bolt and it stripped immediately. Ordered a Helicoil kit. Packed up the mechanical work for the day. Filled the freshwater tank to see what's what. Found a split hot water line under one of the twin beds in the back. Easy to get at, and I hope it's the only one....

Yeah my eyes aren't what they used to be. Without the aid of a digital camera, the threads looked pretty bad. I think I can make that work. Having trouble finding a short 1/2-20 bolt, though. Big Box stores start at 2" in a bolt that size. With a shoulder, so I can't cut it down. Might be dead in the water for today. The size is specific to the big blocks so I may have to wait for the UPS guy.

From what I can see in your photo,, the threads look good, and they make thread bolts weaker then the hole threads so a new bolt should correct the problem.   Hafta luve that Murphy's law thing.

So while i was able to get this cranked down to 85 ft lbs., it stripped while I was turning the engine over after I replaced the rear seal. The bolt appears to be in much worse shape than the crank snout, so hopefully a new bolt will get me going again. Some boob put in a bolt that was WAY too long and cranked it down after it had bottomed out. It lived that way for 25k miles, though.
