Just about every other day, media will do a report on these new so called mini homes or tiny homes on wheels. I laugh because they say its a NEW thing to have your home on wheels. News media interviewed a young lady who spent a little more then $70,000 to build her tiny home on wheels,It was 24 feet long and 8 foot wide. The media said its called MICRO living. She had a loft area for her bed and tiny kitchen with a single sink, A table top single cooking burner that runs off small coleman propane bottles,(like a camp stove). It had 3, 12 volt lights with a single marine battery and a 45 watt solar panel. She had 3 ,,5 gallon containers to hold fresh water and a camp style port a potty toilet. She and a friend in construction built it on a Big store (Lowes hardware store) Landscaping trailer. Its constructed with 2x4/s with 2x6 Rafter beams. They estimated the weight around 12K.
Sounds like a cool project,,,, Unless you add practicality.
You can buy a USED RV for wayyyyyy less then $70K.
Just as an example,,, You find a mid 70'sish Bumper pull RV for say, $1500. needing maybe a little floor work and maybe a window replaced. Throw some new bearings and tires on it... add the personal touches and your sitting pretty good at about $3K, or a bit more, depending on how extensive you get with the remodel. Now you still have $67K burning a hole in your pocket.Throw in registering it etc, and add another $300, just to play it safe. Wow, $66,700.00. Now if you so inclined to Build your own tiny home,,, Do what other tiny home people have done,, Convert a bus,, paint flowers on the side, and play some Hendrix on an old 8 track. Heck, now you have $10K in a conversion,,, Now what do you do with that extra $60K your saving?
I know,,,, Road trip,,,, One long road trip.
The young girl in the interview said the idea of a portable house came to her in a dream, saying it would be nice to be able to take your house where ever you go... Really? No Sh** ? What a concept, A house you can tow behind a vehicle to where ever you want to go.
I should try that out someday,,, Have a house/home I can take where ever I want to go,,,, Oh wait,, scratch that.... I ALREADY CAN DO THAT.. Someone needs to alert the Media,, That a moveable tiny home is CALLED an RV.
These people who sit in a newspaper/media office need to get outside more often and just look around.
Follow up note,,,, The RV park here had a Tiny home come in for residency and the Park owner denied them because the tiny home wasnt registered as an RV,(Hence,,RV park). The couple said they checked every RV park around the area and was told the same thing, and they even got denied at a mobile home park and a state park.
The only option they pretty much had left was to find someone with some land where they can park it, as long as the local ordanance allows it,

I'm an Architect and I can tell you that tiny house thing is a complete waste of money. I sometimes suspect that it's just because these folks can't bear to admit they are basically living in a trailer (not that it's to be ashamed of!) and spend money to be able to show everyone they are unique. Even if you build one yourself, you are still looking at an easy $30K in materials. I just picked up our second RV this week and spent waaaaay less and got a nice driveable house.
The Mini home movement is just another scheme by the media to support some agenda the government has to regulate and restrict when, where and how people live. By that I mean if a free person can move about freely and escape the tax revenue generated by property owners then there is a problem. By keeping this mini house movement in the news it gives the impression that it's gone over the top and needs to be reeled in and some libtard bureaucrat will put two and two together and sooner or later they will tie the mini home movement to the RV lifestyle called "full timing" and soon we all fit into a new category of a new TAX levied on us to you know " EDUCATE" us to the fact that we are not as free as we think. Not so LOL but I digress.
