We, My Wife and I are new , well, new again to RV's it has been quite a few years since.Any way we got another Motor home, new to us 1973 GM Sportscoach 25 footer, Love it, we picked it up for a meager $500 . got it home and was just driving it around in the yard, doing a refurbish on it, inside and out.and all was going well, Until, yesterday, went out and started it up, in order to move it to a shady area, since we still have no power inside it yet, due to remodeling it. but anyway, pulled it up to one side getting ready to back it up into the shade,( hey it get's hot out here in The Texas sun) But any way I could not get it to move in reverse... although I still had my forward gears, and after some fenageling, for some reason I now get forward movement in reverse also? Is this Tranny toast? I checked the fluid level, and it was low, and since I have no idea when it was last serviced, I went ahead and got a new filter, and changed the fluid and filter, hoping it would help, but still no Reverse?  Do I just begin a search for another tranny? and if so what are other options available? such as possible upgrades I could use?

I think it is a turbo 400, it is behind a 454, The motor runs well and showing just a bit over 54k on it.

I called a local Aamco, and he told me they rebuild them for 986.00, Yeah , that seems a bit high to me, but I need to know what other options I have... Help, We Need to get this thing Going...

Thanks, I will send him a message.waiting on the friend request

Sounds like a linkage problem.  The coach builders did a lot of strange things to adapt chassis to their bodies.  You will have to figure out some safe way to check the linkage where it enters the tranny and see if the rods or cable can be adjusted to engage reverse.

I thought so also, but I completely raised it yesterday, and with assistance from a few trusted friends, I did just that, I disconnected the linkage. and manually shifted into reverse, still no reverse movement.. But now I have it up high enough to remove the tranny if I need to. Also, as a side, when I changed the fluid, there was no metal in the pan, just old fluid.
