Hi guys! My family just bought a 1973 Travco (Loretta Lynn). So far there isn't much wrong with her. Had to replace the master cylinder and some hoses, but she's running like a champ. Our biggest issue so far seems to be that someone took out her water tank and didn't replace it.
Any ideas about whether to try and replace it with a new one or try to find an old Travco one? Also, we aren't quite sure how to install the pump and all the workings. Guess we'll have to take it to an RV repair shop for installation.

Installing a new plastic fresh water holding tank certainly is NOT rocket science. Without having seen your rig my best "guess" is a plastic tank would be cheaper n easier to find then an original. You have to measure the space where the tank has to fit then if you go on "Flea Bay" and do a search for RV water holding tanks you will get a gazillion hits, so just find whatever size you want that fits in the compartment. They will have an 1 1/4 inch outlet you place on top with a 1 1/4 inch fill tube that leads to the exterior where you can fill the tank with a garden hose. There will be another smaller 3/8 or 1/2 top outlet you need to connect a hose barb n hose so air can vent out the top when filling. One of the bottom 3/8 or 1/2 outlets will connect with a hose to a 12 VDC fresh water demand pump (has built in pressure switch) which then connects to your fresh water plumbing system and hot water heater etc. Hopefully, most of the plumbing will still be there which you can connect to the new tank...

NOTE some older RV's like the old Winnebagos used an air pressurized water tank which forced water out to the plumbing and Im not sure what the Travco used (and require pressure rated galvanized tanks verus soft plastic) but regardless Id convert over to a plastic tank and a demand pump as described above..

Good advice John. I've been doing bunch of research on installation, and it seems like it will be simple enough to install once we find one to fit. Even thinking we can cover with a metal plate if necessary so the tank won't be so exposed to the road.

i have a 73 if you live around the elkhart in you can look at mine

I'm in Austin TX. Thanks for the offer.

We purchased a holding tank from Inca Plastics Molding Company in Canada.  Our contact was Heidy.  We told her what we thought was the size and she sent was tank drawings to choose from.  Our original tank was made by this same company for our 1978 Foretravel.

I have a 1974 Travco, the water pump is in the bathroom under the sink. Now My Travco has been compleeeeetely restored, If you would like, you can call me and I'll give you all the advice and info I have. As for the Hot water tank, The bed has been raised about 10 to 16 inches, and the hot water tank is under the bed in the rear. If you would like to see the coach to get some ideas, feel free to call me and we can set up a time for you to come look at my Travco, you are only 4 to 5 hours from me, I live in Noble Ok.        Mike   405-812-8204

For our 1964 travco we just purchased a new one at a even supply place that was a size that would fit. I think it better to go with new as I can be assured it is sanitary.
