shellac in 62 mobile scout

I am restoring a 62 mobile scout.  Had to replace some of the interior birch plywood.  Looks nice except I am having issues with the shellac.  After sanding with 320 paper I cleaned with mineral spirits.  The clear shellac goes on ok but drys extremly fast and hard to keep ahead of it. In some areas on the existing walls it looks like it bubbles or rolls up and has a rough finish.  Wondering if it is the mineral spirits I cleaned with?  Also, on the new walls, the amber shellac base is splotchy and does not look consistant.  Trying to match the existing paneling.  Can anyone offer advice

Bob, I have ever only done this once.

In my case I stripped the old stuff off chemically with stripper. 

Wood does change color as it ages so even stripped it did not look like the new panels.

In my case I was able to find a light stain for the new panels that matched the stripped panels very closely. Then I applied shellac. The match was so close that I was the only one that knew.

Thanks John.  I had already gotten quite a bit completed.  Your version probably would have helped me get the match right.  What I did do was thin the amber with alcohol until I felt the match was closer.  As far as the splotchy result I purchased a natural bristle brush and painted like a mad man to keep ahead of the drying.  Still not perfect but have now completed the third clear coat and looks pretty good.  Thanks for the info.

I don't have an answer for you, but I too am restoring a 62 Mobile Scout.  I was wondering if you could share more pictures of the inside.  I'm interested in seeing what mine WAS supposed to be like before the previous owners made changes to her.
