Ac in 1988 ford class c stopped blowing cold air. Debating finding old freon or conversion. How much is normal price to convert over to the modern stuff?maybe I can still find some old freon and get some shop to put it in. Anybody have any experience with this dilemma?

Great discussion on this issue and it just points out how our individual preferences set us all apart as RVrs. There is another good discussion on this issue on rvforum.net among others. My preference is still the roof ac as it cools the whole rig and I feel I get a better bargain and cooler ride with it.

Here's a video about the new type engine driven AC compressor out there. It's a Clutchless Variable Displacement.

John,

Can you steer me to the kit you mentioned? My dash AC is currently non-op because of a pressure hose issue, but I want to change out the ancient York piston compressor for a new rotary type because of the huge difference in efficiency. The other issues for me are both the size of the York and the fact that it uses ozone-destroying R-12, which seems an unconscionable  substance to knowingly  allow to leak into the atmosphere - regardless of the other problems.

Luck continues to hold out for me. Dash ac still works, roof ac is working on 120 or generator that I fired up for first time since I got the rv. Replaced two of three roof vents, middle one with a fan tactic vent fan. One more to go then I can finish off the seams in the roof, paint and call it a done deal for a while cause I want to go fishing. I also installed new sending units on the water tank from garnet technology that stick on the outside of the tanks. Had to do a little modification to the little box that holds the display unit on the wall to accommodate the different size from the old, but now it looks spiffy and everything is functional. Nice being able to tell how much water and poop you are hauling around! Weather here has cooled off quite a bit, so working up on the aluminum roof isn't too bad any more. Still rather be fishing. Sorry I got off the main point and rambled on.
