Jack, I was wondering how your fuel injection set up turned out. I am also going to TBI on a 76 Dodge Travco although from a different Manufacturer. I went with a Fitech system and should have it installed before our first trip in April.

Hello Paul and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

 I absolutely love it. Best investment that I have made. 

I must tell you that I kept my distributor and did not go with the computer controlled one as I have a chassis dyno at my disposal. I can not say enough about how important ignition timing is. With 40 yrs of automotive work and performance engine building I have learned a lot. 

The base timing is not the timing that I am talking about. It is the timing that occurs when you are moving and under a load. Fuel injection likes a lot of advance so if you have any problems with your TBI, it most likely will be in this area. I could go on and on about this subject but it is a long subject and very important that it is correct at 3000 rpm.

Thanks for the info Jack and Merry Christmas to you and yours. This is the type of news I was hoping for. The major difference I see in the system you have and the one I just got is the ability of the Fitech unit to self learn after some basic settings. Did you have any improvement in fuel efficiency? I don't expect much but I was looking for easier starts and more stable throttle response than the old Thermoquad could provide. I never could get the old automatic choke to work properly so I went with a manual and that worked well until I forgot to open it fully after warm up. It will probably be a few weeks before I start the install due to other projects around the house (Daughters Subaru engine swap, Tile floor and new entertainment system for the family room and a couple other items). The costs between the two kits was comparable (with the Fuel system I went with) and the setup I have does not have ignition control as an option. They sell higher optioned kits with all the bells and whistles but even Fitech said there was no need on the low compression 440. I will update as soon as I get it set up and running. The reason that I went with the unit that I bought was so that if I had a problem on the road I would be able to get parts any where. You may be limited in fast replacement parts as not all auto parts stores will have them. As for the self learning that is true of most units. While I am not familiar with the one that you are going to use, the physics is the same. Metered fuel delivery is the advantage with TBI, while not the best system, is much better than the carburetor that you had and you WILL notice a huge difference. Performance and better fuel mileage. My mileage increased about 2 mpg.

If you have the means to check timing at about 2700-3000 rpms with the vacuum advance connected should be about 42 degrees. While base is around 12 degrees with a mid rv cam. If you are stock set to factory base BUT check total advance at 2700 rpm as that is the rpm that you will most likely be at 60 mph. Also I use GOOD gas Chevron 92 octane. I use no ethanol when I can find it.

2 Mpg would be great. That would get me up to 10 mpg which for a an old girl pulling a toad is pretty good. I currently get 8 unless I am am running the generator for the AC. Nessie still has her stock cam and the only change to the engine from factory are the headers. I understand the spare parts and I plan on keeping some on board (with the ballast resistors, Ignition modules, and Voltage regulators). The kit uses a standard Bosch O2 sensor and I have to investigate the rest of the sensors but they look pretty generic.
