on the air bags. I ordered a set of Air Lift 1000 bag kit from etrailer.com and just as you said, I sawsalled the old ones out and the kit had everything to put in the new ones. I used zip ties and a pot of hot water to soften and squeeze them down. Rolled them up and tied them off. By the time I pushed them up the ties slid off. Only had to be careful making sure those rubber disks were in place before inflating.

  • Steven Rose

A rv'er on you tube ordered him some from allegro.

  • Daniel Long

Uh, that was me. The VintageRV'er. Got 2 crispy ones from them last year.

Unable to see it Daniel, says private! Still would like dimensions even though you sent logos PDF. Thanks

  • Daniel Long

What was private? The website? Okay, the logo stuff will be uploaded to DropBox because the file sizes for the front RV logo turned out to be 42 megs. It's slightly curved due to the scanner pulling in a 4' strip into it but it's not bad. I even peeled a bit off and the glue is still good!! Anyway, I'll send you the invite to the DropBox site so you can go there and also send it to your sign guy. Have a good one!

  • Daniel Long

Got back from Watkins Glen KOA and had just about everything working as planned... RV'wise anyway. I am getting a strange air sucking noice off the engine while driving. this happens only occasionally and it ramps up the cabin noise a bit. I suspect it's something to do with the carb and taking in too much air.

  • Philip Wolsonovich

Daniel, it sounds like a vacuum leak. Check your vacuum line. If it's not that hopefully it's not the intake. We're up here just north of Bath south of Keuku lake.
  • Jim Stoltz

Yes it does sound like a vacuum leak. I have a similar issue but haven't investigated. I have a curious "whistle" at times. I most recently heard it in this vid from one of my surveillance cameras: https://video.nest.com/clip/e61ee876224947dabc336519e2c2952e.mp4

It has to be some sort of vacuum leak. It will also load up as it idles. I need to rev it up to clear it out. Another thing on the to-do list.

  • Daniel Long

Yeah, it's something like an additional air noise that starts after running quiet and normal, like someone opens up an air valve. The strange thing is that the vacuum gauge doesn't show an appreciable change. With old BMW's and K-Jet I'm familiar with vacuum leaks and will swap out any of the lines I can get to before the next trip.

  • Jim Stoltz

Well the vacuum leak takes a back seat now. I pulled it out of its spot because the ramps were sinking. I noticed something dripping on the driveway. Black tank is leaking. Looking at it, it's an old crack repair that has opened back up. I have no idea how it happened, or maybe it was just due. It wasn't a great repair. So I'm looking at Plasti-Mend ABS repair. The problem may be that the crack isn't even - there's a lip on one edge. I tapped it with a rubber mallet hoping it would pop back together but no dice. I guess it's been like that for a long time. Good news is that there's just some fresh water and sanitizer in there. I need to drain it and figure out what to do next.

  • Lakota Wolf

FYI,, on additional Air Leak,,,,, Check your EGR valve,,, a quick test is to remove the hose from the EGR and plug it and take a test drive,,, 90% of additional air whistles I have diagnosed was the EGR..    Hope this is your solution....

  • Daniel Long

I was wondering on the EGR. I have her parked and running and you can detect a low whistle. Put her in gear and the vacuum drops a bit. I would consider it a great victory if I could just stop that giant sucking sound when driving.

  • Daniel Long

This engine has about 3 hoses hooked up to the air filter housing. One looks like a breather (foam filter on the 10 position) and two other plastic pieces at 3 and 5 o'clock. These hook up into some belt-driven unit in front of the air filter. Guessing some kind of emissions system.

  • Jim Stoltz

Mine doesn't have an EGR, but it does (did) have a belt-driven air pump. They are problematic. NJ doesn't have inspection (visual or otherwise) so I removed it. Just need a longer belt for the alternator.

  • Daniel Long

All hoses lead to this crazy air pump thing up front. I have no issue removing it and redoing the alternator belt but I seem to think that this belt is not the same one for the alternator. Could be wrong but will look. From there I'll plug up holes for the hoses and see how she runs.

  • Russell E Johnson

The mechanic shop that removed all that air pump stuff on my mh left the pump itself so they did not have to find a new belt. Well it seized up on us on the major trek and we were stranded along side of the freeway in eastern Montana. Had a great mechanic shop there. They removed the pump and got a replacement belt out of billings mt. So we were down on Fri and Saturday. But we were set up properly when we hit the road again. Long story short---do the job right the first time.
  • Jim Stoltz

Yeah the pumps seize up, which is part of the problem. The other is that the little air tubes on the manifolds rust out and leak. My replacement engine is a GM Performance crate engine ("off road use") so it didn't have the air ports on the manifolds. They make an idler to replace the air pump. Not sure. If memory serves removing it makes a pretty long run from the crank to the alternator. The belt slips unless I keep it really tight.

  • Daniel Long

Managed to get a few NY trips under our belt on the P30 and only one mishap with the governor gear getting stripped. fixed that pretty quick and was back on the road. Now looking to go a bit further with the Allegro this Fall down further south.

  • Daniel Long

Since I'm still waiting for ONAN parts... I pulled out the Suburban furnace unit and did a complete repair/ rebuild out of two units to make a good one. Put her back in and yes!! Success! Now I have a toasty RV! I posted info videos on the YouTube....

  • Philip Wolsonovich

Well haven't done much to the old girl this year. I fixed the furnace by replacing the electric valve. I also wired the stereo to the house batteries so we can play music with out killing engine battery. Leaving in about a month for Williamsburg V.A. for a little over a week camping. That's all I have for now the 4l80 transmission has been doing great so far and should be a nice ride down to Virginia.
  • Philip Wolsonovich

Well had a good trip down to Williamsburg V.A.. The old girl did good down and back at 65 to 70 mph. Got about 10 to 11 mpg. Only problem is somewhere and not even sure how I lost one of my awning rafters. Does anyone know where I could find a replacement one. I only need the outer end that slides out and hooks to the awning arm.
  • Jim Stoltz

Glad you had a good trip. Sorry if I've asked you this before, but do you have that 4L80E behind the 454? Did you get an aftermarket controller? Or is it not an "E" (is there such a thing)? I have many questions - I want OD but not sure the best way to go about it.

  • Jim Stoltz

Oh and on the awning thing - I recently got some NOS parts on eBay to make some long-needed repairs. You can try there.

  • Daniel Long

I saw the 10-11 mpg figure and thought, "Dang! I wish I was getting that!" I've been getting 6-7 mpg on my original TH400 tranny. Been considering swapping out the rear end to a lower ratio to get better highway efficiency.

  • Philip Wolsonovich

Jim I have a 4L80E transmission with a aftermarket controller. Yes it's electric so you need to either change the speedometer or get a conversion box. The speedometer is cheaper. You also have to cut the drive shaft and move the transmission mount back. I got mine used out of a box truck and it bolted right up to the 454. She runs 65mph at about 22rpms. I keep the pulling power for hills and speed for the rest.

  • Philip Wolsonovich

Oh ya and you have to put a throttle position sensor on the carburetor.

  • Daniel Long

Been debating a change in the drive train. First was a rear end swap to a better ratio for highway but upon all the advice I'm getting it's looking like swapping the transmission to a 700R4 would get me the economy at highway for about the same cost as an overdrive kit. We'll see....adventures at : www.thelonghauler.com as always folks.

  • Daniel Long

Made it back on what was a 3,242 mile trip down and up the east coast over 2 weeks. Still some tweaking to do on the genset and the carb but overall it was a memorable family trip.

  • Daniel Long

Going to be pulling the Rochester Quadrajet to send to Bill's Discount Carburetor in Daytona Florida for a complete rebuild. Great guy and totally knows carbs. He saved my at least a couple of times before on my Tioga. This carb has not had any work done on it since new (33 years now). Time for a refresh.

  • Daniel Long

Wow. Can't believe it's been so Long (sorry for the pun.) but I've gotten the rebuilt carb installed, timing redone, many other items fixed and the RV is finally running closer to what she should be. Found fuel leaks at the main fuel pump and generator, so that should help the MPG rating a bit. Follow on my YouTube channel or on www.thelonghauler.com blog

  • Jim Stoltz

Yeah mine has never run right. It's a reman carb, so it's "new." It doesn't like to start when it's cold, but that's because of the way I have the choke adjusted. If it sits for any period of time I need to pump the pedal 10-15 times before it will fire. It's running super rich and at a stop light will eventually start to flood. Idle drops and I have to put it in neutral to rev it up and clear it out. Once it's moving it's great.

I have a lot of crankcase pressure and I'm wondering if that's normal. I did a compression check and all of the cylinders are fine, but I get a lot of pressure/smoke out of the breather. It's hooked up to the air cleaner so it gets burned up anyway but it seems excessive to me. That being said, it has plenty of power and isn't using any oil. It leaks a little, but I never have to top it off. Have you noticed crankcase pressure on yours (or anyone else with a 454?).

And I, too, recently fixed my generator. It was running out of gas. It was a loose hose clamp at the pickup tube - the pump was losing suction. It's been bugging me for years. I'm glad I finally found the problem.

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I was also plagued with a squirrel infestation earlier this year. They set up camp in the void between the top of the gas tank and the floor. They chewed through ALL electrical, air and fuel lines that run across the top of the tank. It was a lot of work but I got it back together and working for our annual trip to NASCAR this past June.

  • Rick Faunce

Jim, Sounds like your PCV valve is clogged or not working as far as the crankcase pressure. Or the port in the carb for the PCV is clogged

  • Daniel Long

I decided to use a guy I trust in Daytona, Bill's Discount Carburetor. he's old school and when I got my carb back from him I almost accused him of swapping it for a newer one! Now I get 19+ pounds vacuum and the engine sounds like it's on a dyno stand in the shop.  Jim, you may want to try him out. it was about $200 then shipping. His wife runs the office, so you know it's legit.

  • Daniel Long

Took the LH2 out for a short test drive after getting the new license plates on her. The squeaky belt finally blew off after a gas station stop! Glad it did this now vs. on the way to Myrtle Beach in a couple of weeks!

  • Russell E Johnson

That is good the belt came apart when it did. We lost ours in the middle of nowhere, 4 hours to get a wrecker and towed to a mechanic. Then 2 days of repair, they had to get the part from 150 miles away. Fun times LOL

  • Daniel Long

Got the belt issue fixed by pulling the alternator and putting the RIGHT pulley on her! Finally, the belt is on a correct 6 groove pulley. One more thing fixed on the Long Hauler 2.

Getting ready for the next road trip south to beat the winter blues. If only we can get Mom to not pack for 3 months of clothes....

  • Daniel Long

Managed to redo the wiper/washer hoses, pump and tank so now I can hit a push button and get some water to wash mud and crud off the windshield! Of course we won't be able to travel but hey, it's one thing off my list!!

  • Daniel Long

I pulled my Dometic fridge unit out to fix the roof leaks and rot and realized that under this cabinet, bolted to the floor of the RV is some metal box with a vented top. It's plugged in and has what looks like a voltage regulator mounted near it and some lead (metal and looks to be a thermostat wire going down into the floor). The box is aluminum and is about 11" wide by 8" high and about 9" deep. I'll be examining it more and I assumed it was some sort of inverter but the other connections give me pause.

  • Philip Wolsonovich

It is a power converter. Mine went bad on our first camping trip. Replaced it with a up dated version. Half the size and has a battery maintenance programmed in it. I would replace it while you've got the fridge out. Well worth the money in the extra life you'll get out of house batteries.
  • Daniel Long

    Thanks Phil!

I have a Bookdocking unit on order to replace my old and not-sure-it-even-works no label model.

  • Daniel Long

Well, I managed to find the pen hole (bigger than a pin hole) in the brake hard line and fix it with flared fittings. Now to bleed the rear drums but wow! The bleeder valve is like an 1" from the leaf springs!!

It may be less because I'm thinking how the heck to I get a slotted wrench in there??? Any ideas? Allegro P30 with, you guessed it, rear drums....

  • R.L Hegler

Dan I Just saw your YouTube video on the rear brakes ,,,you’re so right the bleeder is sooo close to the leaf spring /hub assembly ...But glad you got it bled! I just finished installing a new furnace (suburban nt 30sp) Got a great deal I think at only $600..either way the old

35 year old unit needed to go ,the heat exchangers aren’t safe at that age .waiting on parts to rebuild the dash AC ..on to the next project..LOL!!!!!

  • Daniel Long

RL glad to have you on here!! yes, I was so glad to have the right tools to open up the bleeder but wow was that tight clearance Clarence! You might check out my old Suburban furnace fix it videos (took two to make one).

  • R.L Hegler

Thanks Dan..just finished up my dash a/c restoration...whew that was fun ..lol.!    Just love having that cold air while going down the highway.

.Ok. Dan or anyone that wants to help me, I need help picking a new alternator ,I think you replaced yours with a higher amp unit? Contact me if you will at rodneyhegler@hotmail.com because I need To chat about the unit you went with ... I’ve got a 1986 allegro with a gm carburetor 454 v-8

    .....Thanks and Happy RVING!!!!

  • Philip Wolsonovich

Hope some one can help here. My oven valve quit working. It's a Atwwod four burner T2130. Can't seem to find the valve at all any where. Does anyone know where I can find one or retrofit another one?

  • Philip Wolsonovich

Does anyone know where I could find a 80 gallon gas tank for my 86 Allegro?

  • Steve Robbins

    Good morning,

I have an 86 model and was unsuccessful finding a replacement gas tank. I had to weld up a complete replacement. Making a completely new tank may not be necessary. Mine had a rusty bottom. You might be able to patch or replace the bottom section. Good luck!
NOTE: I made the generator stand pipe too tall. This resulted in too much reserve fuel. This is better than too short, but not quite right.

  • Daniel Long

My gas tank is just a welded box for 60 gallons, I think I can squeak another gallon or so in it. Looks like 1/8" steel plate. Good luck on your "project" hope you can find someone to reconstruct it without having to redo the whole thing (at least keep the top where all the bits come out...;-)
