I've been a Good Sam member on and off for years and also Escapees. I've had Good Sam Emergency Road Service for years but ONLY used them one time. In the RV I wouldn't dare hit the open road without Emergency Road Service and there are several different organizations and clubs that provide it, but which you choose is up to you. HOWEVER one problem is if your out in the boonies like in the middle of Northern Nevada where there's no cell service nor land line phones for miles and you're broke down, getting road service can be a challenge lol That's why you pull service and routine preventive maintenance BEFORE you hit the road plus carry some critical small parts (belts, hoses, ignition module, coil etc) and tools plus a good spare tire and tools to change it.

Yep. Even though I don't plan to venture far, nor anywhere there's no cell service, I have belts, hoses, antifreeze, fluids, plugs, wires, etc. stowed away. I'd prefer a quick roadside repair to a tow, even with emergency road service.

  • Jim Stoltz

We all do whatever is within our capabilities and/or means. Believe me, if I could afford to have people fix my stuff I would. I'm glad you're still able to enjoy the hobby and hope your next trip is trouble free.

  • R. Randall Halton

Those road side service's are good if necessary.

Thank you, Russ!  I'm excited about learning whatever I can about my RV. Most of the interior is in excellent shape, (with a few spot exceptions) and it runs well. I'm sure I'll be able to sort out the rest of it will all the experience and knowledge represented here.

  • R. Randall Halton

Hi Russel, I hope everything is good with you & Beninese. Starting to cold again, seems earlier this year. Here's some spring wonder for you & Berninese,

  • Deborah White

Hey Russ,  It wasn't my intention to get 3 trailers in one week! LOL   I found the little Papoose.....and HAD to get it.  When I showed the pics. to my daughter, she said, "Trailers here (in Utah) are a dime a dozen!  That day, she found a 1968 Fireball for me, for $1,500.00.  So, I bought it.  The next day, she found a 1955 Cardinal for $500!!!  I wouldn't walk away from that!  Do you remember the old children's story, "Hundreds of Cats, Thousands of Cats, Millions and Billions and Trillions of Cats"?  Where the very old man went looking for one little kitten....but fell in love with all of them!!???

  • Rusty Youngblood

    Thanks Russ,

I intend to learn as much about my '87 Holiday Rambler as Possible       She a beauty. Thank you for the warm welcome. Rusty

  • Mary Jo Wright

Thanks for letting me join. Can't wait to get started on our camper and will need lots of information on fixing things. We have never done anything like this before!

  • Jerry and Patti Burt

Thanks for the welcome Russ. I've been building cars and boats for 50+ years so I hear what you are saying. I think we've pretty much narrowed our search down to a well maintained 73-75 GMC. Living California, I want to stay 75 or older and upgrade as needed.

  • JoeyC

    Hey Russ,
It all factory built from Boone Coach works, in Lauarl Mississippi, my understanding they built all sorts of interesting builds for over 45 years. They apparently went out of business in the early 70's. The picture is actually where I found it, at the local scrap recyclers. Just couldn't see it being recycled yet. It has just over 9k miles on it. Runs great. I plan to completely restore it to original build.

This Bendix Lifetime has set for seven years. Great 440 Dodge motor, Kohlor generator. First big problem was a leaky roof. Fixed all that and of course bad ceilings every where. I think I solved a problem for other Restorers. To fix the ceilings. I took a damp shower towel held to the ceiling until they were soft. I used a staple gun and 9/16 staples to make the ceiling as flat as possible. Then used thin coats of drywall mud, sanded and painted with Killzz, put back vent trim, and other trim, painted one more time. Saved all of them. After 400 miles they look great. and I saved a lot of time and money. Rebuilding an old timer is hard work, but when you are at a stop and people checks out the old boy the shit buttons start to pop

Looking forward to digging through the site to find out as much as possible on my 1973 Shasta Loflyte Front Kitchen. just picked it up a couple weeks ago and after a full inspection looks like a rebuild my be in my future. My first RV so looking forward to the days ahead.

  • Steve barham

Thank you, Russ. We have until may to finish this project and will definitely be posting our progress. I will get some pictures on here as soon as I can. I have been doing some digging and cant find much on the '74 Brougham Coach. So far I'm figuring her out but I'm sure I will run into some issues soon. Do you know of any resources for these beasts? Restoring inside and out. Also, power steering and wiring issues.

  • steve jordan

    Thanks Russ.

I do have a question. Do you or anyone you know, have any knowledge of the Robin Hood Cadet travel trailers? I have a 1962 Robin Hood. And not find a whisper about them. Please help!

There is scant info on the net.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Patty Bohn

Thank you, Russ, for the kind words.  I'm really looking forward to getting involved in this site.  I'll be full of questions, for sure, and this looks like a great place to find some answers.  First, though, I'll look around and see if some of them have already been addressed.

    Thanks again, Patty

Thank You Russ.  This is a new adventure and undertaking for us.  We have replaced water damaged boards in our 5th-wheel and are hoping this will go as smooth. Now if I could only find out some kind of information on this particular camper.

We may be calling on you for resources.

  • Alsie

Sorry for the delay in post... Thank you very much for the wishes!

  • phil moulton

i would take u up on it.. heads and carb are rebuilt. i cannot even turn crank to try and unhook the trans . it ate #4 cylinder and imploded the piston when the old intake gasket dumped all the antifreeze in the cylinder. cranked it over for comp tests and flushed it with kerosene . took 2 weeks to get the pan out (eventually cut it out) and the kerosene i think seised all the bearings. i need to turn crank 1/8 turn to get the rod in #4 out to even look at the cylinder damage. Replaced the balancer bolt with a milodon and a 4 ft breaker on 3/4 drive stock will not turn it. (it did turn it tighter by 2 revolutions but I stopped at that point in tightening it.

What ever works. Right. At least you can get mail.
  • Jack Wasmuth

Hey Russ, read my post please.

  • carey masci

I m doing my best to get there!

  • Lorne Coultman

Thanks so much. I bought a used Security Penthouse 32 ft. And want to update the inside the body seems in great shape but without a manual finding it hard to check everything out. I can't find the grey and the black tanks to make sure they are drained for winter. I found the clear water cand the water heater but that's all. The coleman airconditional blows cold air when on 110 volts, but no heat at this point. The Domestic fridge doesn't seem to work on 110. yet.

  • Gary Spears

Thanks for the welcome!  Do you go by Russell or Russ? I sure am anxious to get some seasoned opinions...

a couple months ago while looking for an inexpensive camper trailer we stumbled across a 1987 31ft Class A Pace Arrow in nearly showroom condition with less than 10,600 miles on it.  The short story is this – a farmer in rural upstate NY bought and drove it home from the showroom during the summer of 1987. He and his wife took it on a trip to CA and then again to Florida.  That fall he converted an old grain silo into a storage garage where it’s been stored on a raised wooden floor and out of the elements. After that first year his wife suddenly became sick, and eventually passed away.  It was virtually never used again.   He routinely would go out a couple times a year and drive it around his compound to keep the tires in shape, checked the various systems, kept a small amount of fresh gas in it, and made sure there were no rodent invasions.  This past summer the farmer turned 86 and he decided to use the silo for some other purpose, so he decided it was time to say goodbye to “Elmer”.   We happened along at the perfect time.

The exterior needs good wash and wax job, but that’s about it. The interior is pristine. It’s been kept out of the sunshine for decades and thus the upholstery fabric is in showroom condition.  I thoroughly inspected it all throughout and couldn’t find a single mouse dropping. The old farmer said that other than some rain during that first year, it has never seen any foul weather, including ice, snow or road salt.  The undercarriage is amazing. The rubber components are all in great condition, the engine is smooth and strong, the transmission shifts solidly and quietly, and when I took it to the RV shop near our home to be inspected the proprietors kept raving about its incredible condition. Additionally, I have a neighbor who happens to be a 25 year RV tech specializing in upgrades and repairs who tells me it’s extremely valuable as a vintage RV.   Several times he has referred to it as nearly museum quality.

So here is my dilemma – Is this really special?  My wife and I are starting a new business and perhaps its worth more to us if we sold it. But then again, I could quickly fall in love with the Class A life style.

What is your gut instinct? What could an old RV in this kind of condition really be worth?
