I have looked through my owner's manual but I cannot locate the size of the fresh water tank. Does anyone one you lovely people happen to know how many gallons the fresh water tank is on an 87 Southwind? All I can locate with a google search is newer MHs which shows 80-100 gallons. I need to know so I can do a disinfection of the water system.
Sorry, no idea of the exact size, however, for many years a 30 or 40 gallon tank was sort of common. When I disinfect I don't do any sort of exact measuring, I just add 1/2 cup of bleach and fill 3/4 or so full with fresh water and drive around for plenty of sloshing then drain and refill with water and baking soda and do that again then finally fresh water only for a couple fills and dumps. OF COURSE we NEVER drink water that is stored in our fresh water tank, we carry drinking water separately. I'm sure they sell commercial RV water products, but bleach and baking soda is all Ive used in 40 years and never a problem plus the water smells clean n fresh. But I'm NOT against using a commercial product or doing it exactly by the book, your RV your money your choice.

hi John, thank you for this information, What size is your tank that you decided on using 1/2 cup of bleach?
I used 1/2 cup on 40 gal tanks but Id use the same for about any size. Since its thoroughly rinsed and flushed again a couple times AFTER the bleach treatment, there's not much residue left and since we NEVER drink holding tank water anyway, I see no harm in overdoing it although a manual might say use only something like a few tablespoons???? That's just how I've done it for years, I'm sure its more then recommended so best do your own homework, I'm still living so far (am today at least) after doing that for years...........Tell you what though, after bleach and baking soda the water coming out the faucets smells sooooooo fresh n clean!!!
