Has anyone thought of or has used Flex Seal to seal the roof of their camper? Thoughts?

I've had more luck with the Rustoleum product. The colors are better (white is really white) and it seems to cover much better. You can find them for sale at Walmart (although it usually the black color) for 2 for one packs. I use the black for foam protection on the underbody and in spots where I had to fix leaks in the ceiling where I had to get to the aluminum ceiling.
The product is really good for those seams, gaps and other spots that need a flexible seal in lieu of a caulked joint.
Stay away from anything silicone, it just wont stand the test. I've never used Flex Seal and it may be good for temporary repair but for a permanent well done seal I would stay with Dicor products or Sicaflex. My local RV sales use's Rustoleum as Danial mentioned with good results. When I first got my RV I took it to them for the shake down inspection and it's what they recommended; mainly because of the color selection. I'm of the opinion that if you use good quality products you get a better and longer lasting seal. I used Sikaflex # 21 or 22 for standing seams and Dicor self leveling around the vents and pipes. This will be my third year of ownership and no leaks so far but I do go up and inspect it from time to time. What ever you chose to use prep is the most important factor and if you have to peel of old silicone you will need to clean with an acetone or other cleaner such as lacquer thinner to remove the residue left by it or you may not get a good seal even with a good product. Good luck with your project.
Last year,,,at least,,,, neighbior tried the flex seal for an irritating leak on his roof,,,It worked great for about 3 months and it quit sealing and his leak came back,,, He said it sealed real good at 1st,, then dried out and just cracked and flaked off... He said after sanding the old stuff that was left, he used White coat roof seal and hasnt had a problem sinse... He only recommend flex seal for a temp to get you by product, but says it does NOT last..... Well maybe it will last on your boat if you cut the bottom out and put screen and then seal it with flex seal, But Not good for rv roofs.
Do you notice that they do not mention the price of the Flex Seal when they are waterproofing an entire basement OR building a screen boat? That boat probably had a couple thousand dollars worth of product on it! Great stuff if you put it on thick enough but who can afford to do that!
Thank you all for replying. I did go down to the local hardware store for some items. There set Flex Seal for $89.00 per gallon. wow... I think I will have to go another route.
I do have another question. Does anyone know what type of roof material was used on the 89 pace arrow? Does it really matter what I use to seal or is the original roofing important to know in selecting the proper chemicals?
Thank you all !!!!!!!!!!
My roof is a single piece of aluminum sheeting, A lot of the newer ones use ply wood with a rubber membrane. Either can be patched with the products mentioned. you just have to be diligent with prepping. and for real, stay away from silicone it just turns to snot and the residue left behind will not allow for good adhesion. Use a poly based sealer. There are several how to's on site that goes over roof repairs; just go to the search bar and type it in or look through the list on the right side of this thread called how to's. Good luck with your project Dean and I hope this answered some of your questions.
Eeek, Id stay away from flex seal, it is not flexible or long lasting,
Also Please do not use any form of acrylic to restore an RV roof, it will not last longer than 5 years and cannot stand up to long term water.. We have created an amazing repair and restoration kit for Fiberglass,EPDM and other RV metal roofs, it includes a self adhesive tape, a fiber-ed coating for seams, voids and around vents and an amazing silicone top coat, it is highly flexible, withstands ponding water, hail, wind and fire. You can see pictures on our facebook page of customers who have used the products, as well as re-coats we have performed. Its Easy, Affordable and Lasts. www.roofarmour.com or www.roofarmourdiy.com - Happy Trails!! |
Hi Pat, thanks for that feedback, we are in the process of re-vamping the Do it yourself kits by Roof Armour and www.roofarmour.com sites to make them more user friendly, I will post an update in a couple weeks when they are live :)
