been looking for a vintage Winnebago to restore and found a 1970s ITASCA and trying to figure out this number ! 70436J111596, Vin or a Serial number ? Looks like Serial but is on title under VIN , Something they maybe done 40 + years ago ?

Don't feel like your alone. My short 5th wheel registered under the Serial number in California, and V.I.N. in Texas. Each state has its own protocol on how things are registered. I just take Both numbers in for registration and let them figure it out.
Dean West,
Yes that is completed manufacturer. There a Winnebago vehicle ID plate on the drivers side wall under the drivers side slide window.
Can’t find anything unless it’s hid behind door panel, can see where there was a sticker on inside of door jam that glue gave up the ghost after 40 years Lol
MY BAD, I have a 78 Itasca Class A. Yours is the first Itasca Class C I've seen. I assumed...LOL
Gotta run. I ttyl
Okay Dodge would manufacture "Class A" incomplete chassis. Also they built Van cut-away chassis for "Class C" I have seen the ID tag on Brave Driverside door post below the knocker. That tag is a completed vehicle tag.
Dodge had Chassis VIN for these RV Chassis. Most noteable was an aluminum tag with "De Soto" and "Fargo" on it. these tags would removed from the frame and reattached to the engine compartment driverside wall. the holes on opposite corners would be rip as they were removed to reposition it. Also on "Class A" that VIN is stensiled in the outside of the frame above the passenger side front wheel. My computer crashed I will look for a picture.
