I have been searching for months for the two-piece speedometer cable for my 1978 Dodge Monaco (Dodge f40/MB400 chassis) but though I have had three separate cable sets that parts suppliers insisted were the right ones, none were.

The problem seems to be in the Cruise Control equipped vehicles, where two cables, one about 26" long and the other about 108" long, are required. It is apparently easy to find cables for the non-cruise-control equipped models. I have now given up on the parts stores.

Does anyone have any constructive suggestions, or similar experiences that ended in finding the cables? It is difficult to believe that with so many Class C motorhomes built on the 1-ton chassis with the Dodge 440 and 727 transmission, it is so hard to find these parts.

Any assistance will really be appreciated.

We are in the same boat Randall.  We have a '78 Sportsman, same engine and tranny.  We have searched for 3 years and had the same bad luck and we currently use our GPS as a speedometer.  If you ever find a source, we will be glad to hear about it!  Good Luck!

I will certainly post any finding of parts or service for this problem.

Best of luck!

I had same problem with a 79 sportsman. Rv salvage yard even laughed and told me good luck on new replacement parts. I ended up bypassing the cruise and was lucky enough to scavange a cable to make speedo work,(somewhat). it would sporactically jump around when it felt like it. Don't know why they designed something that they assume won't need replacing in the future. I checked with all my contacts and they say the same thing,, good luck finding something for replacement.

As each new comment arrives, I grow increasingly doubtful of ever finding the cables for the current installation.

On the other hand, the T727 transmission is so ubiquitous that I am thinking that the cable end/connection there would not be a problem; A different OEM speedometer gauge might be a possibility. Have further come to believe that the defunct cruise control company is part of the "two cable" problem.

If you still have your old cable pieces you should be able to take them to an International truck parts store and find some help. They usually have kits to assemble any cable from parts in stock.  Just a matter of matching up ends.
