I hear that David, as you know I've been looking at double steps, not really seeing any built like my 38 year old singles, I'm thinking of doing the Johnson's approach and just carry a small step. cheaper that way too. But I'm either way I'm going to pull my old step and rehab a bit. A little wire brushing paint and skid strips you know the drill.
Ive used the electric (12 volt) scissor jacks, and they seemed cool at first, but after a dozen uses, it seemed to lag till it just couldnt do the job anymore. (Retire them to just a show piece).
I installed 4 electrics on a 30 footer,, lasted the couple a little over a year till one,, then two then a third was being tempermental. Ended up putting manual crank downs. They use a cordless drill with socket adapter with 3/4 inch socket to spin em down, then a ratchet to snug them down tight.
Rule to keep something working properly is keep any and all moving parts well lubricated and at least once a year, remove all grease and lubricant with a good degreaser, and scrub it a little with wire brush, reprime and repaint it, then re lubricate it. (the old grease will collect dust and crud which will gum up the long thread and end bearings.)
WOW, 30 years is a long time for a screw jack to keep working, you must have kept right on top of their maintenance.
The jacks picture was to show that even after 30 yrs, they still work flawlessly. Thanks.
Lakota, the fireplace and the jack installation look great, you did a terrific job.
