The man I bought it from only had it 6 months. He had gotten it to fix up and had other things come up. He was told by the guy he got it from that the front tires were new and the backs were a year old. the front tires were recently new Bridgestones and the outer rears looked to be a little older. Besides starting to strip out the interior the guy i got it from drove it once a week around his neighborhood. I think the guy who sold it to him hid the 2 dry rotted tires on the inside. I still have to replace the spare as it was the best of the old rears and I just don't trust it.
I am both lucky and unlucky at the same time. I don't have the split rim wheels but I have the 19.5" wheels using the not so easy to find 8 R 19'5 tires.
That's not good he didn't know or tell you about the tires. When I bought my 270 it had new tires on it, no spare though. That's wonderful the truckstop personnel referred you to a close tire dealer. I looked at mine the other day and they seem to be starting to crack. Some day I'll sell the OEM split rims and tires when I get around to the driveline restoration. I guess the antique restores prefer staying with the OEM split rims. Well safe travels to you and your 270. It's really beautiful, and very cool photo Paul.
Mine was a similar event. but In the end I'm happy with the out come. Tire shop wouldn't touch them so I ended up buying all new and now I don't have that pit in my stomach when I load up.
this was the maiden voyage for us. one of the previous owners hid the oldest dry rotted tires on the inside rears. they blew out with in 20 miles of each other. The road service took 2 hours to get to us after the first flat and did not have the right tools to change it. 3 hours after that we got back on the road and lost the second at an exit from the interstate. A 24 hr truck stop there had one but recommended a tire shop right there that would have the right size tires and be open in the morning.
I'm a member of that club too Paul, not fun running down the interstate waiting on the next one to pop. Scared my little co pilot to death and it's all I can do to get her to climb back in.
Thank you. That was in a hotel parking lot after the second rear tire blow out on Easter. Needless to say the old girl got 4 new rears the following morning.
Cool photo Paul.
