Lakota Wolf's Blog (116)

When contracting out work on your RV.

With the recent article and attention to the *SCUM BAG, who takes, hard working folk's money to repair, restore, upgrade etc and then not do the work,, We all have to get our radars up in full attention mode.

As with ANY type of work, whether it be your home or RV, Check and double check there credentials and Local Reputation.

Now don't get me wrong,, there are some down home good ole fashioned folks who enjoy doing this stuff in their retirement years to keep them busy and to…

Gas Refridgerators

Ok folks. I have talked with several of my OLD SCHOOL fellow RV'ers, and Decided to post a blog on Gas fridges.

(Im relaxing before a long haul).

Ok, here goes.

The number one problem the Old Skoolerz,(as we are called) have seemed to notice over the years is Auto ignition, (peizo ignition).

Case in point,, Ole Frankie,(our senior member in the close knit group), had a problem with his Auto ignition clicking ON,even when switched over to full electric. He would…

Fire Safety.

It should be written in stone that EVERY RV'er should have more then ONE Fire extinguisher. I occasionally get a wild hair to go L@@KING at the NEW RV's, The A's,,B,s C's, Bumper pulls and 5th's. Just to see what new and improved plastics and fiber board they are implementing in them.  3 out of a dozen or more that I walked through,,,had a fire extinguisher in them. When I questioned the saleman or woman about the lack of them,, They said that its the customers obligation to have one put in…

Whats Lakota been doing?

What have I been doing that I'm NOT supposed to be doing and what have I've been doing thats constructive?.

Since before Xmas holidays, I have logged 3,000 plus miles between Waco Tx and Corpus Christi Tx. (Padre Island). Having to look after my Folks property that my brother owns and I watch it while he ventures out and about, (usually in Michigan). To off-set the cost of travel expenses, I have hot shot'ed some B/P and 5th wheels both ways. I christianed  bubba jr. (Red 97 dodge 1500…

Your RV Tires.

Whether its a trailer or a motor home,,, Your tires are right up there in the safety factor. I have come across several RV'ers who go screaming down the highway 75 mph 80 mph etc..In the last 3 trips from Waco to Padre Island, I have come across 3 RV'ers,, 1 motorhome and 2 travel trailers will tire failures. The motor home driver said his tires were only 11 yrs old and looked *fine. He was also fighting the lug nuts due to them being rusted on, (he bent his cheater bar on one lug nut).  Road…

Ole Red goes to a new home.

My ole Diesel  OLE RED, was retired and passed on to another guy to bring her back to life again. She aquired catastrophic failure to the ultimate degree when it was least expected. I blew out overdrive along with destroying the transmission cross member support and rear U-joint,,which was followed by severing the rear brake lines and blowing out a suspension air bag. With doing so, it dropped the drive shaft on the pavement along with beating the snot out of the under carriage of the…

Classic Rv's and Memories.

Ive repaired and refurbished Old,new and inbetween Rv's and after careful thought, I have determined that older RV's were built at least 70% better then whats on the market now. Yea, sure the newer Rv's have ammemities and bells and whistles and doo dads that make some, rolling mansions. To me, Camping is just that, To get away for a weekend or a week or maybe 2,, and NOT taking a rolling 4 bedroom house with the 90 inch flat screen tv's and such, (excluding full timers,,no offense…

Love to argue with RV dealers.

I recently decided to go to RV World, locally here.  Sure they have some nice new shiney rigs of all shapes and sizes.I was asking about power cord plugs and misc.. the owner replies hes been in the RV buisness for 30 plus years and has never ever in his life seen a power cord tucked into a storage box or one that has two plugs,, one to go into shore ped and the other end plugging into a plug on the RV side, He said sinse the mid 50's ALL rv's have been designed with a screw in type power…

Common sense on RV's tires and brakes.

We all know before taking a trip, to check tire pressure and lug nuts.

It's not rocket science.

I had picked up and 2011 39 foot 5th wheel for a friend from the DEALER.

It was supposed to have been prepped and inspected etc, prior to delivery to the customer. The so called 200 point safety inspection.

I did the walk around, tires looked good and I assumed the lugs were tight, because the check sheet said they were torque to specs. I hooked up,, pulled forward and…

Finding Rv parts

It is very hard locating exact replacement parts for older and vintage RV's. Some companies have opened up and specialize is Replacement parts molded from factory molds etc, but they are more for Classic Tin cans... Not your everyday Joe building a not so famous Rv/trailer. Ive watched Vintage RV shows rebuilding a classic but havent come across a show with a 70's  Nomad etc. Each RV'er has his own taste in what they want,, A Lincoln,Cadillac or even the Rolls Royce of RV's,,Its all the…

What are they thinking when building NEW trailers?

Sometimes it is a bad thing to be the nice guy in the RV parks,,, Not complaining, But alot of people get the word that I work on RV's and they come knocking on my door, or catch me tinkering outside.

A *newbie to the RV world has a 2 yr old Innsbruck by Gulf Stream 28 ft bumper pull trailer that has a serious water issue. The issue is,,, City water back filling into the fresh water holding tank. This results in the tank filling up, and being under pressure balloons the tank to almost…

2 trucks,,2 trailers, 1 driver.

Talking with another long time RV'er, He asked me how do I get 2 trucks and 2 trailers moved from point A to point B, by myself ?.

I thought I would share my *trade secret. :-)  DISCLAIMER***

This is only for the seasoned RV'er. and info on how I manage to move my equiptment around.

.

I take ole Red, My Dodge 3500 and back it up to the front end of my Dodge 1500 truck. (I have a 12,000 lb winch on the back of ole red). I get out my 4 foot steel pipe and u-bolt…

12V and 120V lighting. (combination lighting)

Ok, another Blob bringing up a subject I have seen on this and other RV sites.

A combo unit, 12 volt and 120 volt lighting fixture. An RV parts distributor did have a few that he had sold years ago. They were designed for custom rebuilds. RV manufactures didnt install them due to liability issues with people installing the wrong bulbs. (household style lightbulb, but 12 volt, into the 120 socket).  They did have a combo unit on the market a few years back that had 120 fluorescent twin…

Roof a/c conversion.

I just had to share this info.

I have a friend who replaced his rooftop a/c unit 3 times in 5 yrs, and as he said, he could have bought another RV with what he spent on replacement a/c units.

I joked with him one day about retrofitting a window a/c unit to a roof mount.

Well, he said we need to work on that idea. So,, with old rooftop a/c removed, we set a $99. wallymart 5,K btu window unit up on top. Then we estimated and guestimated what we would need for duct work.…

First time Rv buyers.

I  was asked by a few friends over the years,, what do I look for when buying a used RV,,,Motor home, trailers. (which includes bumper pulls and 5th wheels).

I first look at over-all structure. Looking for damage, especially water damage.

I walk around the outside looking at the siding , and looking underneath at the under carriage. This will include, holding tanks (if equipped).

I will check the tank drain valves for easy movement and any leakage.

I look at the…

Video cameras for vehicles.

If you have ever wondered about rear video cameras to be able to see whats behind you and your RV, Only to look at the RV dealership and see $399 to $1,000 units and the sticker shock made ya burp some chili ya had last weekend? Almost all NEW cars, trucks and RV's have back up cameras. That leaves us,, the ones with older classic Rv's and trailers that dont have all that fancy electronics Preinstalled.

I have shopped around and finally settled on EBAY, with reputable sellers, who have…
