Rv air conditioner sealing (units using standard gaskets)

I looked around to see what I could find on the subject.  Trailer life had a good article, I thought could just advise people to read that and I could just expand on what they said.  Its call "Trailer life roof air leak repair".  If the air conditioner frame touches the roof then its gasket replacement time.  They are designed to drain out the bottom of the pan and touching the roof restricts flow of water.  That's why you NEVER seal the outside edge of the pan.  Also, the pan will rub the…

Trotwood Lark Camper Trailer?

I own a 13ft camper trailer.  The only brand identification on it is LARK on the back.  It looks like an old Shasta.  I did some research and learned that the Trotwood company manufactured trailers long before Shasta and that Shasta was a cheap copy of the Trotwood.  I dont mean to insult Shasta owners, but I would like some information on my trailer.  Anyone own a Trotwood Lark or know anything about them?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

     Thanks, Steve

Refer leveling

When I was a youngster, there was a running joke. Three things you dont do: sword fight with Zorro, pee in the wind, or mess with me! Well there is the three things you dont do with an RV. Dont let her leak. Dont forget to winterize. And dont runthe refer out of level. Get an appliance level. I like the small square one with the green fluid. Place this onthe freezer shelf. Half the volume of the bubble( 2/3 diameter) in the circle anytime the fridge is on and your stationary more than 1/2 hour.… Continue

Looking for an answer

Found this trailer for sale and am wondering if anyone knows what it is.... I'm guessing late 40's early 50's...I think at one time it had a single rear brake light

Weight distibution hitches (round bar)

I'm going to keep this simple as I can. I want to cover the round bar weight distribution hitch. The square bar are trickier to adjust ...you can google your instructions if you wish. I would like to say that the Hensley arrow and the Pullrite systems are the best. The main drawbacks to these are they extend so far past the bumper, its hard to get any good equalization out of them. The farther behind the bumper the ball mount is, the higher the load on the spring bars to get the weight… Continue

Brake Controllers: Inertia vs. Timer

I'd like to discuss these 2 styles because almost all brake controllers fall into these 2 catagories. i'm purposely skipping the old fashioned hydraulic/electric controllers. They were very good, but dont do well with the newer tow vehicles. So lets break it down:

Timer style: these controls are timer based. you basically set 2 features; overall gain, and delay. When the brake is depressed far enough to activate the stop lights, the controller activates. You set the delay for the… Continue

Cataloging?

I would like to find a link to a cataloging of older small camp trailers showing sufficient details and unique features  that can help identify the manufacture, year, and unique features  I did find an attempt by someone to put together something like this but it was incomplete with small photos and very little details.

Maybe with such a listing a cataloging of available information such as when and where manufactured, availability of parts, service manuals and schematics for…

Your RV Tires.

Whether its a trailer or a motor home,,, Your tires are right up there in the safety factor. I have come across several RV'ers who go screaming down the highway 75 mph 80 mph etc..In the last 3 trips from Waco to Padre Island, I have come across 3 RV'ers,, 1 motorhome and 2 travel trailers will tire failures. The motor home driver said his tires were only 11 yrs old and looked *fine. He was also fighting the lug nuts due to them being rusted on, (he bent his cheater bar on one lug nut).  Road…

Waterline repair

I did a search and did not find anything on this subject. I thought it would be good to share some ideas and tips, and open the topic for discussion. I am a fan of the new PEX waterline. Its supposed to be good to 50 degrees below and I have yet to see a failure. Though I would still winterize it. I personally like "flair-it" fittings. They need no special tools and are trouble free from my experience. There are o-ring style fittings available too but ive had issues with these in the past. I… Continue

The nightmare continues

In our quest to find a motorhome under $20,000 there always seems to be something seriously wrong with it. We checked out a 1999 fleetwood flair with no leaks or delam. In mint condition on the surface but when they turned on the AC it was obvious they had mice. Insulation in tiny pieces came raining down. My first impression was NO GO because of the damage you can't see...is it worth a second look since all rv get mice sometimes?

Rotted wood repair that works

I recently began doing some much needed winterizing and noticed I had some wood that had rotted. This seems to be a common item I see people mention on their motor homes and seems to be somewhat common on the class C motor homes where water penetrates via a cab over window and gets into the wood frame structure.

Since I had seen this issue previously and did some repairs, I wanted to look back at the repairs I did about 5 or 6 years ago and see how those areas held up. As it…

Custom 4 Speed OD trans build

Tonight I spoke with a custom build shop in Georgia about building a one off 4 speed OD transmission for my 77" Airstream Argosy 28 motor coach. It will be based on either a 700R4 or a 4L80E. I am torn between having a shop build it or building it myself. My target is a getting my 3200 RPM cruise down to 2200 RPM. And being back up and running by spring. Probably taking my last camping trip of the year this weekend before I take the AS down for the trans build and EFI/TBI conversion
